Sweet tropical hoppy and hint of malty, bready nose on this one! Taste follows with a smooth and balanced, hoppy bitterness that is subtle and not overpowering. This has a nice and soft feel on the palate! This is a good and refreshing westie!

Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: American IPA
Glass: Clear 16-oz. Bruges beer glass
Price: $3.25
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa, Calif.
Purchased: Feb. 7, 2020
Consumed: Feb. 8, 2020
Misc.: Canned on Jan. 15, 2020 at 7:10 a.m. PT
Had heard of this beer, but really didn’t pay too much attention to it because I wasn’t a huge fan of Pizza Port IPAs. But looking at the hops on the back of the can on a trip to Trader Joe’s, I was in. (actually now just figured out that Coronado was a collab with Pizza Port in this and actually probably should lead the way in it). Back of the can read, “Coronado Brewing and Pizza Port go way back. This collaboration celebrates the decades of friendship spent paving the way for craft beer in San Diego. This first release, South of the Pier IPA, is Coronado’s take on a West Coast IPA; brewed with a hefty dose of Southern Hemisphere hops for a bright, tropical aroma and crisp, dry finish. So, let’s raise a pint to good times, great friends, and Beers Between Piers (and peers)!” The hops mentioned on the back of the can were Mosaic, Amarillo, Waimea and Motueka.
Poured a medium yellow clear color with three fingers of rocky white head. Lots of bubble streams coming up along the sides of the glass. World-class foamy uneven lacing. Perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled Mosaic, mixed berry, pine, spoiled tangerine, caramel malt, guava, red grapefruit and a peppery spice. A little better out of the can. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted about as good as the nose. Got pine, mixed berry, spoiled tangerine, Amarillo, Mosaic, caramel malt, guava, red grapefruit peel, black pepper and viney berry. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Spicy finish. (Feel - 3.75)
Probably overrated this overall, but it was very good. (Overall - 3.75)

Handsome clear golden amber brew with abundant foam in the snifter. Light body with a melt-in-your-mouth carbonation. Frothy in the nicest way. Lime and orange notes in the aroma. Hops are listed at Mosaic, Amarillo, Waimea, and Motueka. It's an interesting blend of aromatics, some fruit, a touch of mineral, and a fragrant finish.
Green melon flavors plus a dose of and a little green pepper. Tangy without being acidic. Moderately bitter with a persistent mild malty sweetness.
I have received more pleasure from Pizza Port's endless series of West Coast IPAs than say, Fremont, Stone, and Firestone Walker. From the 16 oz can purchased at Trader Joes in San Clemente.
