Type: 12-oz. draft
Glass: Clear snifter glass
From: Alpine Beer Company pub in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $6.00
Purchased: Nov. 10, 2015
Consumed: Nov. 10, 2015
Misc.: Pizza Port tap takeover
Poured an almost pitch black color with two fingers of tan, frothy head. Great looking uneven, foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention. (Sight - 4.25)
Smelled boozy bourbon, Jim Beam, roasted toffee and hints of roasty chocolate, but bourbon really dominates here. (Smell - 3.50)
Taste was better than the nose and more balanced. Got bourbon, rich toffee, chocolate syrup, dark chocolate and dry, dark coffee malts. Still boozy, but not as bad. (Taste - 4.00)
Full body. Thick texture. Average carbonation. Boozy finish. (Feel - 4.25)
This was a pretty good effort, although I probably overrated it a tad. I decided on a ‘4’ overall rating just ahead of a ‘3.75.’ (Overall - 4.00)

Draft at Toronado San Diego.
Pours a dark chestnut brown color thats almost black with a thin off white head that quickly settles. No lacing.
Roasted malt aroma with a subtle barrel presence that doesn't overpower the base beer. Much more tame than the other Pizza Port BA beers I tried. Nice bourbon presence along with some vanilla and toasted oak but that barrel character is a bit faint for my liking. Lots of dark roast malt and sweet chocolate notes with hints of caramel, toffee and coffee.
Medium bodied with a spicy barrel presence. Not much heat with moderate bourbon flavor along with some vanilla and dry oak. I usually prefer BA beers where the barrel/spirit do not overpower the other notes but this beer could use a bit more barrel character. Lots of sweet malt notes with hints of chocolate, coffee bean, toffee and oatmeal. Subtle roast countering the sweetness. Well balanced but a bit tame.

Had on tap into a snifter at Toranado's in San Diego.
Beer pours a very nice black color with a good bit of tan head.
The beer smells extremely sweet and you can definately smell vanilla and bourbon from the barrel aging.
The beer tastes extremely sweet. You can tast dark chocolate and vanilla, followed by a very strong boozy bourbon taste.
The beer was fairly thick and a bit creamy.
Overally a bit too sweet and boozy for my tastes

Full 12 oz pour at PP Ocean Beach on 12/31/11. Review from notes.
Appearance: Rich, deep brown on edges, closer to black in the core. Surprising amount of activity on the top for what otherwise looks like a thick beer.
Aroma: Full notes of roasted malt, sweet milk chocolate, and very faint hints of heat. More sweet than bitter smelling.
Taste: I get a lot of raisinette types of flavors. All the detected aromas are involved in the flavor, but they meld in a quick way. I'm picking up way more in dark fruits and raisins than I did on the nose. Maybe it is the hidden booze, which I didn't pick up that much of here.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Deceivingly rich, but not all that heavy. Slick in how it coats the palette, but isn't all that hard to drink.
Overall: This beer isn't without its charms, but not my favorite. Too sweet, could've used a lot more bite somewhere.

On-tap at Strong Ale 2011
Pours essentially black in color with a finger of dense tan head. A strong coffee/espresso aroma to it. Lots of roast and dark, bitter chocolate. Moderate bourbon and vanilla notes. There is a touch of sweetness on the palate from chocolate and vanilla. Heavy on the bourbon with some oak notes, too. Lots of roast and espresso type coffee. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach for their first anniversary. Tulip.
A: Near black in the glass with a big creamy brown head. Good retention.
S: Big chocolate, bourbon, and caramel notes, with oak and ample vanilla. Coffee presence is at a lower moderate level. The chocolate is a blend of dark and milk.
T: Great mixture of dark and milk chocolate with a dash of brown sugar. Cookie dough comes to mind, and the bourbon has a commanding yet well integrated presence. Traces of vanilla and caramel. Coffee is evident but does not dominate. Alcohol is very well hidden. Excellent.
M: Lower full in body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is chewy, sticky, and creamy.
Overall: A great beer, especially considering this is Pizza Port OB's first barrel aged offering. Seek this out.
