Pennsylvania Porridge is our American Porter inspired by the hard-working Pennsylvania Dutch. This robust porter features a generous addition of flaked oats for a silky, fuller bodied mouthfeel and boasts notes of baker’s chocolate and coffee with just enough American hops to balance it out.

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a Mikerphone tumbler. Pours a dark brown to near black with a half finger of lighter mocha brown foam head. Chocolate, bourbon, oak and tobacco up front on the nose. Taste mostly follows. It’s a little less bourbon and tobacco and more chocolate and faint, day-old coffee notes. Medium mouthfeel. Decent for the style, although a 6% barrel-aged porter might be a unique subset of a style. This works though. Initially, nothing too exciting but it grows on you over the session.

Undated bottle. Served at 46.2 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 53.7 degrees.
Appearance – 4
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, same but some ruby at the edges.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.4 cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, high density with a rocky top, quickly receding to a 0.3 cm crown fed by carbonation, and a rocky partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.75 – Weak roasted malt, dark chocolate. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.75 – Begins lightly bitter. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, no hops, no yeast. No ethanol (6 % ABV as marked on label) aroma or taste. Very weak gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends with a bitter, burnt taste.
Palate – 4 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Basic porter with the oats failing to contribute to the texture.

7/4/22 On tap at State College location with Mom!
A lovely pour. Iron, molasses, cocoa nibs on the nose. Sweeter as it warms up.
Definite cocoa powder, molasses, bright carbonation, and slight cocoa sweetness. And the company (Mom) sweetened it more!

The feel is just a little bit thin, but I like the toasty, smoked flavor that comes out as it gets a bit warmer.

For a 6% beer the appearance is mind boggling. Looks like a 12% dense frothy stout.
Smell also extremely impressive for a milder beer. Extremely rich and roasty. Toasty almost burnt malts and dark roast coffee are dominating.
Taste is pretty solid. I really dig the bitterness of this. If you like your coffee black this beer is your guy. If you like your coffee foofoo go drink a pastry stout because this ain't it.
Feel is horrid. Which I suppose is expected given the abv but this kind of ruins this beer. It's watery and thin just doesn't support the nose and flavor. I feel like this beer would be an exceptional candidate on nitro draft but as it is out of the bomber is extremely disappointing.
Overall idk. I guess a 4?

8 ball black with a short khaki blanket settling to a finely thin but creamy collar.
A solid, if not slightly spicy entry into the porter field. The roast here is lightly smoky, nutty and tobacco-forward, accented by a slightly more bitter pinewood touch in the finish. Tobacco blooms with time, but so does a mild amaretto nuttiness, all while remaining overall bitter.
The round, medium-full body softens with fine bubbles before coming to a nearly full dryness, exhaling a little tang.
