This is a one-off batch of brew from Trou du Diable brewery. Bought from a popular beer store (Depanneur Peluso) in Montreal for 7.50$ CAD (taxes and deposit in). I admit the name and graphics caught me in its snare. Poured from fridge temp into standard American pint glass. Drank on a hot balcony, so it warmed up fairly quickly. Labeled at 4% abv as a light Saison ale.
Appearance: Pours with a thick pure-white head that recedes at a moderate rate to leave one inch thick head and ample lacing on the glass that stays as the head recedes. Pours a mostly transparent golden urine/sunlight colored liquid. Nearly possessing a mildly greenish tint when viewed in bright sunlight. Noticeable particles float about (most likely yeast).
Aroma: Some noticeable funk, almost mildly reminiscent of pungent skunk weed. There's definitely a Saison barn-like quality to it. Funky and mostly sharp.
Flavor: First thing that's noticeable is that this is a light beer. Hard to find much flavor at first. When searching, it's apparent this has predominantly ale qualities. Some characteristic hop bitterness that stays for a while after finish. Fruity and almost citrusy, but not quite. Not much Brettanomyces yeast, if at all. There is some underlying saison character, but even under the light ale it is hidden. Though it tends to pop through at times on the finish, along with the hop bitterness. Ale and Saison flavors seem to pop in and out throughout, especially in the finish. Saison character seems to come out more as it warms up (or maybe gets air).
Mouthfeel: Light. Like a juice quality. Moderate bitterness almost gives it a texture in the mouth.
Overall: An interesting light beer, light on ale and saison qualities. Not for everyone I imagine. Although I admit I'm not a major fan of light beers, this one is much better than at least most of all the popular light macrobrews out there. This is a bit more bitter and less "ale-like" than I like in a summer beer. More mellow and toned down. If you like saisons but find them too strong or "funky" this might be for you. Worth a try - if you can find it that is.
