Starr Hill Brewery is excited to announce a new partnership with the University of Virginia to offer Wahoowa Pale Ale. Wahoowa Pale Ale’s recipe was made with UVA specifically in mind.
A hop-forward pale ale brewed with an exciting mix of new and stalwart hops from the pacific northwest. The unique blend of hops gives off fresh fruit-like aromas and flavors while complimenting a simple yet effective malt bill of Pale and Vienna malts. The smooth body balances the bitterness while allowing the hops to shine through.

L - poured somewhat hazy, near golden. Small bubbly white head. Decent lacing.
S - light citrus, orange peel and grapefruit.
T - pretty hoppy for a pale, but not too bad.
F - thin mouthfeel with a sharp aftertaste. Some hoppy bitterness at the end.
O - pretty good beer. Maybe not what I was expecting from a pale, but okay.

From the bottom of the can in very large, easy to read letters and numbers: "PKG ON: JAN 18 23"
Appearance: The body is a medium shade of gold with a slightly dull hue. It is somewhat hazy but letters are still legible through the glass. It starts out with a huge white head and it slowly fades out to a medium-large head. The head is rocky and fluffy. There are clumps of lacing on the glass.
Aroma: There is a light bit of a grapefruit peel scent to the beer and a light hint of flour.
Taste: It starts out with some pine and lemon flavor. The middle of the palate has a stronger version of the pine flavor with hints of lemon and a somewhat strong lime flavor. The back of the palate has the same flavors but there is a lingering white pepper flavor. It has a really outstanding and clean flavor that presents itself really well.
Mouthfeel: It is a lighter bodied beer with a clean presentation and a crisp finish. There is a light pithy hop bitterness to the beer which works well with the citrus flavors. It is very easy to drink.
Overall: The aroma on the beer is just present enough that it creeps into average territory. What makes up for this is the fantastic flavor, body, and presentation of the beer. I would drink it again and I would recommend it.

PKG ON; AUG 09 22.
Subdued light toasty malt aroma with light grapefruit-orange hop notes. Flavor is somewhat more forceful but still easygoing with light caramel and toasty light malt character with more grapefruit, orange, and herbal hop flavors. Light-medium body with dry finish. Unassuming middle-of-the-road APA.

Can, two weeks old:
First off, it pours a lot more pale than I expected. Not 100% sure why I expect an APA to have more toasted malts, although maybe it is the mention of Vienna malt in the bill. The beer is nearing cloudy initially, and though it doesn't totally clear up, it becomes less hazy. The beer's head builds up nicely and leaves various markings on the glass.
The nose has an edge of spent grain, but a fairly lemony note that pairs with a dry grass to hay note that might be familiar to a few beer drinkers. There's a hint of sweetness countering the herbal citrus note that teeters between sugar and honey.
The beer is soft on opening, but with a firm bitterness as the ending draws near. The grains and initial bitter notes evoke a dry cracker with a dirty metallic edge. A little honey patrols the sidelines, and I'm also getting a little bit of watermelon in some sips, oddly enough. Relatively, the lemon is quite muted in the taste compared to the nose; the taste brings more peel replete with pith versus a lemon wheel sprinkled with zest. The end brings dry grass to join the grain and a little bit of pine in the finish.
A pretty solid brew at this age while it still has a bitter edge to it.
