On-tap at Prime 16 into a 3/4 pint glass. Apparently the head brewer from Gardner brought this along on his way to the Real Ale Festival. Fun surprise!
A: Black body, mahogany highlights, thin light-brown head with average retentin and some nice, fine lace. Ok.
S: Aggressive aroma of roasted malts (bitter coffee, dark chocolate), herbal, floral hops and alcohol. Nice, but a bit on the bitter + boozy side.
T: Quite hoppy here, with the chocolatey malts relegated behind an enjoyable onslaught of grassy, herbal, piney hop flavors. The middle portion of the sip, where hops and malts hold equal sway, is a delight. The finish, unfortunately, is marred by a hugely boozy aftertaste - too bad. Still, this is a very tasty stout.
A: A little thin for the style, but with a nice moderate amount of fine carbonation. Pleasant.
D: The big bitterness keeps it from being cloying in the least, but the alcohol is just too prominent. Now that I see it's only 8.5%, I'm especially disappointed in its heat.
Notes: This would have been a fantastic hoppy stout if it weren't for the major booziness. I really thought it had to be in the 11-12% range when I was drinking it, but now that I see it's far lower at least its thin body makes more sense. It's always fun to try something new, of course, and I'll be on the lookout for more beers from Gardner.
Cheers!

Stopped into the pub today for lunch. Was hoping their DIPA was still on but, alas, 'twas long gone. Saw "Wicked Big Stout" on the board and thought, "hey, wtf"...
Served in a small tulip, perhaps 10oz filled to the brim. Brew was a very dark, dense, opaque brown. Topping was tan and creamy, though ebbing rapidly. The remainder of the head was some fine bubbles, mostly rimmers, with nice lacing left in the glass. Aroma was very roasty, with lots of choco and coffee, along with suggestions of florality. Bodywise, it was a middle of the road medium, and the palate-passage was quite smooth and easy.
For the flavor, lots more roasty qualities come into play, with choco, coffee and cocoa tingling the tastebuds. There's a touch of sweetness there, though the bitterness is player #1. Hopping is quite heavy (I believe it has 92 IBUs) and the floral aspect here really coats the tongue and lasts nicely. Though not as complex, it reminds me somewhat of Smuttynose Russian Imperial Stout. Had 2 of these with a great pulled pork sammich and I was good to go.
Two years today, Dad. Prosit to you!!
