On tap at the brewery. Deep orange body, almost a red brown. Smells of pine hops, a little citrus, and a strong toasty and caramel malt. Tastes of a hefty malt backbone. Caramel malts and toast. Not anywhere near as sweet as I expected. Boozy, though. Strong pine bitterness. Medium heavy. While I do get some citrus, it’s mostly pine. And it is practically an imperial red, but it isn’t sweet, which is its saving grace.

Citrus, pine and funk right off the bat. It's NOT a fruity beer, so don't let the citrus notes deter you. This is a well balanced brew. Warmth of the 9.2 ABV slides into second like a pro. Not boozy at all. Medium dense head with nice lacing. Lingering, bitter-stickiness on the back end. Wash it down with another one, or meat, or roasted nuts. A really enjoyable, semi-complex brew. You'll love this!

Never liked Ale Asylum until I had Velveteen Habit. Haven't had many imperial citras so perhaps my rating is a bit high as I love citras and this was something relatively new to me. Very, very drinkable for the ABV.

12oz bottle, first release, served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark caramel body, almost slightly brownish hue, one finger white head, short retention and bits of lacing. Smells like freshly squeezed grapefruit and tropical fruit, moderate caramel sweetness, light biscuit and touch of honey. Flavour falls a bit flat; moderately sweet caramel, slight tapioca and toasted malt with a mild grapefruit and citrus fruitiness, followed by a moderate-hefty resinous bitterness. Not particularly juicy fruit like the Velveteen Habit; this seems to have been imperialized a bit much without the hops to help compensate. This could have used more hop aromatics. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, smooth, good carbonation, substantial body with a sweet caramel and citrus finish. Fairly decent double IPA; but significantly sweeter than the base IPA where it becomes a fairly different beer.

Aroma is dank/spicy hops and nutty/peanuts. The flavor is citrus, pine needles, peanuts, malts, grapefruit and a mix of spicy and bitter in the finish.

12oz bottle, dated 52217
A - creamy beige head caps a very hazy deep amber colored ale
S - big juicy citrus aroma of orange and grapefruit, caramel malt, and a bit boozy
T - orange and grapefruity citric hops meld well with sweet caramel malt and toasty grain, some pine and mango rides out the finish
M - fuller body, alcohol is warming, finishes both bitter and sweet
O - good DIPA here. I'd try it again.
