Had a pint of this at the brewpub, followed by the simacoe one hop IPA, which was fine, and their scotch ale, which I didn't care for at all. This was the only one I felt like reviewing...poured a dark black, with a small, red-tinged tan collar.
The aroma was really nice and strong, but one dimensional - all butterscotch to me. Yummy.
The taste was much more balanced chocolate and vanilla, with a slight hint of raspberry (and cherry), and coffee grounds.
The mouthfeel was very nice, light and super creamy.
The was a tasty easy drinker with a clean finish. Had I not know it was a fruit beer, I might have missed it.

I was certainly unsure about this beer but I thought Id give it a try. It pours like a stout should, a dark black color with a brown foamy head. The head quickly settled into a dark lace heavy around the edges. You can clearly smell the raspberries and toasted malts right as you bring the beer to your nose. The taste does the name justice. Its a nice blend of a dark stout and raspberries. The stout is heavy on chocolate flavors with hints of coffee and a clear malt flavor. Interlaced is a sweet raspberry flavor and mixes well with the other flavors. The beer is heavy and goes down creamy. I would say this would be a great beer for drinking with a sweet dissert. I imagine a chocolate cheesecake. If you have a chance to taste this beer go for it.

Harmon brews a number of fruit infused ales, and while I always approach them with slight trepidation, I do try to keep an open mind. A raspberry stout? Does a stout really want to connect with 84 pounds of raspberry puree as this one had?
A pint of this summer seasonal convinced me that a mixed marriage of roasted barley and red fruit possessed worthy merits. The raspberry flavor is formidable though the aroma is remote. Clearly, the character of the stout takes a back seat to the fruits. This makes Heart of Darkness an ideal dessert beer and I can easily imagine a hearty serving of black forest cake accompanying this black beer.
For whatever reason, Heart of Darkness is undercarbonated and the body was solemn and without foam. Still, a successful experiment.
