Tasted by half-pint at the Black Bull, Whitechapel, East End London. The pub is a freehouse but serves mostly Nethergate's beers, so I'd say it's perhaps the best place in London to sample Nethergate's beers on cask. And I'm glad that it's so close to where I live.
A: dark chestnut-brown hue, great clarity, coming with a thin but foamy head; usual low carbonation.
S: nice, vertical-structured spicy hops hand in hand with a caramel-crystal maltiness; fruity elements also abound: apple-peel+berries/raisins, but pretty standard for a premium bitter.
T: sour-sweet berry+plum jam like fruitiness of malts and hops and a slightly sour woody edge, on top of a deeper, light toffee-ish malts with a caramely hint; very smooth yet with a solid body felt at the centre of the palate, leaving but a bitter-sweet touch in the aftertaste, where the aroma of fruity hops and malts lingers well. Nice.
M&D: very smooth and softly carbonated for a cask-conditioned ale, this med-full bodied premium bitter is a quite balanced fruity sample of what Nethergate has to offer fresh on cask. Quaffable!
