Quite a lovely pile of long-lasting suds in the narrow-bottomed glass. Creamy mouthfeel and a handsome, very dark amber color. Flowers and grain in the aroma.
This starts out like some kind of malty porter. But it's clear after a couple of sips this is more of an IPA than anything else. Quite hoppy, which seems to be the rule at Scuttlebutt, and it does get to be overly bitter even for this strong brew. There is some modest malty sweetness and some dark roasted malt. Dank and rather intense on the herbal hops. A touch of bitter chocolate.
Oh, I forgot about the barrel flavor. It does briefly have some oaky notes, but the bitterness finishes that off after a few sips. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Chuck's 85th St. Market in Seattle for $6.59.
