Scuttlebutt Brewing Co. "Charlie Noble"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle
Notes via stream of consciousness: So what is this? An IPA at just 4.6% abv? I guess it's a "session IPA" then. I tried to pour this carefully to keep the lees at the bottom of the bottle but I failed and now it's a cloudy golden-orange beneath a fluffy head of off-white. I see that there are quite a few fine bubbles rising within it though, so I wonder if there was really anything I could do to keep those lees down once the pressure was released and the carbonation started to come up. At the very least, those bubbles are helping it to maintain a head which is nice. The aroma is yeasty, floral, grassy, spicy, and sweetly malty. The flavor follows, as you might expect, with some additional apple and pear notes from the yeast. The malt is mainly grainy and bready, as if it was simply 100% pale malt, although there might be some light caramel in there. It's got a firm bitterness to it that anchors and balances it, and then comes forward and lingers in the long, dry finish along with some yeast, malt, fruit, and grassy and spicy hops. It seems very English in character to me, although I've never seen an English ale with so much yeast to it. In the mouth it's medium bodied and effervescently crisp. In the end I really don't see this as an IPA, it just doesn't have enough hop aroma or flavor. There are other pale ales that have brighter aromas and flavors, and I really see this as just a pale ale. Of course calling it an IPA will surely help with sales. It's enjoyable enough but I really think it would benefit from a little more refinement.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 12 fl oz bottle on August 1, 2018. A refreshing IPA suitable for every meal of the day. For those who don't know, a Charlie Noble is the smoke stack on a ship's galley. We wanted to brew something that was flavorful that could be enjoyed all day. Relax and savor the experience.
