The appearance is quite handsome, with dark orangey amber topped with a creamy pile of suds in the narrow-waisted glass. Unusual candy nose with a whiff of leaf mold. Flavor starts out with orange marmalade and gets more and more bitter.

Dark malt and canned peaches hops can't compete with the bitterness. This is just so woody and astringent. For years I have thought Schttlebutt has a penchant for dark and dirty hops, and this is yet another example. Borderline undrinkable. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Haggen Market in Burlington.

Edit: Ming The Merciless is a character from Flash Gordon. He's the main bad guy in the movie.

On-tap, at Hop-in Brew last night.
This was magnificent. My pint was a bit cold so the aroma was struggling at first, but the taste of the hops and the mouthfeel on this-- plus 8.6% alcohol-- made for a stunning brew.
Definitely a brewer to watch for; well done!

22oz bottle - who, pray tell, might 'Ming the Merciless' be? Label info is good, people!

This beer pours a clear, medium bronzed amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, rocky, and somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves some defrosting frozen windshield lace around the glass as it quickly sinks away.

It smells of gritty and biscuity caramel malt, a touch of warm toffee, some muddled tropical fruitiness, subtle earthy yeast, and some resinous piney and leafy green hop bitters. The taste is grainy and biscuity caramel/toffee malt, melting nougat, still mixed and matched tropical, citrusy, and pome fruit notes, and more edgy herbal, floral, and piney hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate in its basically supportive frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and more or less smooth, as the big-ass malt seems to tamp down on the various trouble-making hop esters in this regard. It finishes trending dry, believe it or not, as the big resin-forward verdant hops snatch the reins away from the heretofore coasting malt.

Overall, this is one big, round, and actually quite complex version of the style - both the malt and the hops playing various roles that have my palate veritably a-jumpin'! No real sign of the 8.7 points of wowee sauce, either, so good on these folks for that, too. Anyways, a pleasant and engaging reprieve from all those freaking sour beers out there right now, amirite?

This won't be the most detailed review, because I'd already had a few high ABV beers before making my way to this one tonight, but I wanted to help get it to that 10 review mark.

Scuttlebutt makes some damn good beers, and this one doesn't disappoint, but it's not my favorite from them. I think it's worth trying since it doesn't come around often, but I think Hoptopia is definitely better. I'd drink it again, though.

From 1/2 growler into standard pint glass....

Two finger, nice head... smell is the best part about this beer... very tropical. Taste is a bit harsh around the edges... starts out with a nice tropical blast but ends in a dirty hop profile... its easy too drink but again very middle of the road with much better offerings out their in DIPA land....
