Had on tap at CBC. Completely black when served, very low head. Aroma is actually a bit low, with roasted notes as a theme. Flavor is of roasty notes, some peanut skins, and even tangyness. Mouthfeel is medium -, although also a bit syrupy. Over-all, not bad, but not as complete a beer experience as I come to expect.

On tap in a pint tumbler, excellent lacing on top of a nearly pitch black brew.
A bit of char, roasted coffee and unsweetened chocolate in the aroma and flavor. Smooth medium body, really easy to drink. Solid hop character that does a bit more than balance. Right on the mark for an American Stout for sure.

Swore off all drugs and alcohol with this one on 5/14/2005. 16-oz. pint at the source.
1/8-inch crust devolves quickly to a Petri dish growth of covering with some fits and starts of stick and lace. Cant say much about the hue other than black, pitch black. Caramel sweet and chocolate malt hits the nose straight on, followed by a nutty roasted character and a slight, lactic chocolate note. Malted chocolate on mouth, but cleared out by the roasted malt and flaky oat. Toffee and chocolate flavors stick on the mouth pleasantly, and overall a medium-bodied offering.
Solid, rock solid pour. The Beantowne Espresso uses this as a base, with the coffee added to it.

This beer poured a pitch-black body with a decent sized tan/off-white head.
The nose was a bit hard to make out in the bar, but I could make out some chocolate tones mixed with a very fresh dark malt smell.
The taste was smooth and medium bodied. Tastes of dark roasted barley, hints of chocolate, with an overall slightly metallic roasted barley bitterness. A black liquorice flavor really fights its way through and balances nicely against the dark malts. I couldnt really taste much in the way of hops, mostly just a smooth well balanced bitterness that seemed to balance, or come from, the dark roasted malts.
It ended smooth with a slight bitterness.
Overall a decent stout. I kept thinking it tasted like a super fresh Guinness with every sip. The soft liquorice is definitely a nice touch as it comes though. Basically though, not a beer Id go for first, especially since the day I went they had both this and the espresso stout as the special beers.
