Serving: On tap in a footed pilsener glass
Served: 1 August 2015
Appearance: Pours a deep golden color, really great for a lager for sure, that's slightly hazy and crowned by a nice one finger head. Leaves good lacing.
Smell: Noble hops, fresh baked bread crust, biscuit, and a pinch of grass. All this is fine, but there was a weird underlying earthy funk to the whole thing (likely due to the yeast strain and the warm fermentation).
Taste: That earthy funk is here again, and really not great. This almost seems like a version of the Remain in Light lager gone bad. The beer had so much promise from the appearance and the good qualities in the nose, but I find the earthiness too much. Other than that, the beer has good noble hop flavors and a to-style bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium-high carbonation. Spot on.
Overall: I wanted to like this beer way more than I did. It seemed to have so much promise, but it all kind of fell apart with the earthy funk, which I attribute to the way it was fermented. If this was a straight lager, it'd be marvelous.
