This beer was made for the 2009 Barleywine fest at the Cambridge Brewing Company and served cask conditioned.
From the CBC website:
"'08 Blunderbuss cask-conditioned in a 'pin' with sherry barrel oak. Nutty and rich sherry flavors complement caramel malt character, with a full oaky finish. Served via gravity."
A dark reddish color that obviously doesn't have any carbonation going on. No head either. Pumped into a snifter.
Very nice aroma. The sherry and the oak are pretty bold and noticeable followed by a caramel malt smell.
The taste is basically like what the description says, and it is very good. The boldest flavors are the sherry and the oak. Up front comes the sherry, sweet with notes of dark fruit and nuts. The sherry gives way to and blends with a solid caramel malt backbone with a hint of hops. Finishes with a big oak flavor. This is a well-done beer that is nicely balanced, the sherry and oak are very noticeable and identifiable, but do not mask or overpower the barleywine itself. I'm glad I got a chance to try this.
Medium bodied with no life to it at all. It is almost like sipping on a sherry, but thinner. A little dry from the oaky finish. Not bad at all.
For a beer that is 11%ABV, this one is pretty damn drinkable. No alcohol presence at all. If I had been asked to guess what the % was, I surely wouldn't have gone as high as 11. Combined with a great, balanced flavor, this is a very drinkable offering.
