Nearly no head and no resulting lace. The liquid is deep brownish amber and appears to be clear.
Neutral darker malt smell with a sweetness that is less than most barleywines. More like caramel than anything else.
Boozy start and finish. The caramel is both sweeter and stronger than the smell suggests. Lowly carbonated but appropriate for the style as is the very rich body. The swallow, in addition to the alcohol, has a dark toast flavor with the lightest of hop bitterness. The aftertaste is warming.
