No bubbles whatsoever on the initial pour. The broth (it looks like onion soup) is brown with no light shining through BUT it isn’t near black like Stouts.
The smell is like raisins soaking in rum—lots of alcohol and sweet. There’s a touch of nuttiness in the background.
Even though this barleywine is five years old, it tastes immature, like the best is yet to come. This appears as a sour harshness (particularly in the swallow). It seems yet to mellow into the rich sweetness typical of the style. There is plenty of raisin, almost like a port. The body is rich with very little carbonation. The swallow is almost like grapefruit (with raisins!) leaving an interesting sweet/tart finish. I would love to try this in five years—I imagine it will become a superior barleywine.
