On tap @ the Cambridge Brewing Company (Cambridge, MA) on 10/29/11 during their 4th Annual Great Pumpkin Festival. Served in a pint glass.
The beer program describes this as a barrel aged spiced pumpkin Porter.
Pours black, with a thin covering of mocha head. This retains with a good degree of richness, leaving back a solid amount of spotty lace behind. The barrel jumps right out in the aroma, with a combo of bourbon, sweet vanilla, and then more of a medicinal tannic feel. Sticky notes of cocoa, pumpkin, fruit and a touch of ripe pumpkin sit underneath. There is some spicing here but it mostly gets mopped up by the strength of the bourbon.
The taste is chocolate, vanilla, juicy pumpkin flavor, and green citrus. The pumpkin actually has a bit of a toasted feel to it and does stand out a bit. Spices are present but mostly exist in the background. The finish on this is STRONG, with notes of burnt roast and charred bourbon. The barrel flavor itself is actually handled nicely here, not being overdone in any way, but does get strengthened a bit by the extreme roasted feel of the backend. This finishes dry and burnt with some lingering oak and even a touch of spice. The mouthfeel is medium to fuller bodied and crisp on the tongue but does soften up a bit on the edges as this expands out. Alcohol is well hid with any just coming from the light barrel flavor here.
This was decent but that combination of aggressive burnt roast coupled with the already warm charred feel to the barrel just go to be a bit too much after drinking this for a bit. It was overall enjoyable for me but only in a small quantity.
