On tap during the 2012 Great Pumpkin Festival held at the Cambridge Brewing Company on 10/27/12. Served in a pint glass. This is a Strong Ale brewed with Blue Hubbard squash and a combination of caramel and Munich malts.
Pours a clear dark copper, with ½ finger of smooth light mocha colored head. This retains with a moderate richness, leaving back some spotty sudsy lace. The aroma smells of candied sugars, some lighter dark roasted accents, notes of fruit and spice which hang with the sweetness here and finally, a fresh pumpkin feel on the edges.
The taste is darker malts, with sticky notes of caramel and brown sugar and a flush of pumpkin-like character from that squash along the back. Light yeasty notes of fruit and spice compliment the other flavors well. The finish is dry with a little lingering burnt character on the tail-end. The mouthfeel is medium to fuller bodied, with a sharpness to the carbonation that blows up some in the mouth but does lessen a bit the longer this sits on the palate. That higher ABV here is handled pretty well for the most part.
This wasn’t overly complex but I still found it to be quite nice, with those yeast and squash flavors nicely complimenting that combination of dark and sticky roasted sweetness from the malts. I easily could have sipped on this all afternoon and been happy.
