Had this a few times and sadly my last bottle....sniffle. But maybe saved the best for last.
Popped the cork and a little foam was already registering on top of the beer waiting to be released. I grant it. Pours a slightly hazy, slightly clear amber ale with a nice dose of off-white foamy head. Good lacing.
The aroma is big caramel reminding me of a barleywine. Candied sugar, rye, pine, bread, brown sugar and a slight plastic whiff.
The taste is very rye forward on this one. Almost harsh rye but not quite. Good kick of citrus/orange and hops on the tail end of the swallow followed by salivating buds with a slightly dry (and more rye) finish.
Overall I really enjoyed this. The barrel really gives a nice dose of booze while creating a higher rye kick. Not sure how they do it....but they do it. I've had it for about 6 months and this has really enhanced the rye and mellowed the booze which I noticed very well on the earlier, fresher brews. It has evened out to something special. Nicely done.
