June 10th, 2016 - Sierra Nevada's take on this light, German classic is more Belgian than Teutonic. Did some Belgian yeast sneak into this batch? Is this a tacit endorsement of the Schengen Zone? Hard to say, but it doesn't sit much like a Dunkelweizen. The aroma is thick with glue, and some apple and berry sweetness (hence, the accusation of Belgian espionage.) And so it goes with the flavor as well, with a light, Belgian Strong style flavor (woodsy, umami and berries) but floating awkwardly on a lager light body.

From a variety 4 pack of Sierra Nevada's High Altitude beers.
L: If Dunkelweizen means brown in German they nailed it. Pours a foggy brown with a tan head, great lacing.
S: Bananas and clove. Perfume.
T: More banana and clove, throw in some wheat and fruit.
F: Very nice body, good thickness, good carbonation.
O: Thoroughly enjoyable, but probably a one and done, unless I see the variety pack again.

Great brew for a pre-Thanksgiving Feast. Or could be a good Thanksgiving dessert beer, it would go well with a slice of pecan pie.
Poured into a tall wheat glass, foaming head that soon dissolves, dark brown maple body.
Smell has hints of malted banana and clove. Taste has a sticky, fizzy, malty maple banana caramel toffee flavor that comes with a mild to medium alcohol bite. Besides the barley wine in the high altitude series this would be the runner up in the 4 pack.
It's almost like a higher gravity, darker Oktoberfest Marzen with notes of of maple banana.

Pours - Deep mahogany color with tan colored head, great lacing.
Smell - Lots of banana and clove, malts, very sweet. hint of nutmeg and spices as well.
Taste - The taste is similar to a banana pudding, banana, clove, biscuit, sweet milk chocolate like a dessert taste.
Feel - Very coating, full body, well carbonated.
Overall - Really great taste, it is like a dessert in a glass.

24 oz. bottle poured into a weizen glass. Pours a deep brownish black in low light and a hazed mocha brown in the light. Offers a nice frothy cap of foam that lingers nicely and shows a robust boil of carbonation from the bottom of the glass.
Aroma is yeast driven and with a notable wheat presence. Darker malts are quite subdued at this point. Warming brings out some more malt notes and subtle banana notes. Pleasant but not reach out and grab you like some.
Taste offers more malt notes and a bready wheat character. Firm mouth feel and effervescence throughout the glass, but again a bit random and lacks a cettain sharpness in character. This resonates on the finish as well, with a slightly sweet finish more like a porter albeit with more yeast character, yet not quite enough for a great weizenbock. Still, it's quite good and befitting of the descriptive name, though not quite an Aventinus. Yeast notes are a bit too subtle for me and the finish a bit too vague.
