I came to this one with low expectations. I'd heard the anise flavor was too strong (it is hard to get subdued anise flavor), and I have had anise flavored things. With the exception of licorice, anise flavor usually doesn't deliver home runs. I'm also getting tired of endlessly gimmicky adjuncts. A biscotti beer? What next? Sigh.
As I plan my beer week, I try to get one clunker out of the beer fridge each week. How do beers I don't much like get in the fridge? This was this week's clunker.
However, I found this to be quite a bit better than expected. I actually enjoyed it. The anise was not over-powering, and I really liked the almond undertones. I had recently had some locally made absinthe. Now THAT had a strong anise flavor. This was tame by comparison. That probably helped.
The almond flavors, while not very forward, were the best part of the beer. From this, there would appear to be some value to almond flavor in beer. Almond should be tried by itself, without the anise, in a stout or quad.
One interesting factor was that the first sip was great, and subsequent sips were less so. It seemed that the palate became anesthetized to it. You should really wait 10 minutes between drinks to get the full impact. Not sure what causes that.
