New Zealand’s Wai-Iti hop is bright with aromas of mandarin and lime zest. Add the signature orange zest/marmalade notes from Pacifica hops, also of New Zealand, and you have our Southern Hemisphere Hoppy Pilsner. Crisp and clean with hints of orange zest and spice, it combines subtle complexity and superb drinkability.

Picked up a single from the Craft Beer Hop Stop cooler on 9-17-18 for $1.49. Canned on 5-25-18; cold stored since purchase. Consumed on 12-20-18.

Beer poured golden orange with a nice white head that is leaving some lacing behind.

Nose is a nice fresh pilsner malt with hints of citrus.

Taste is a pilsner malt baseline that melds nicely with hints of orange and some lemon-lime.

Mouthfeel is light and pretty refreshing.

Overall a solid Gernam pilsner that combines the old world and new world very well.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. "Southern Hemisphere Hoppy Pilsner"
12 fl. oz. can, "PKGD 052518C04:11"
$22.29/12-pk Southern Hemisphere mix @ Javies Beverage, Philadelphia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Hazy yellow gold body beneath a finger thick head of white foam. It looks like some of the kellerbiers I've had in Germany and Austria. The aroma is interesting. It's like citrusy candy. It's mainly orange but there's more to it than that. And yet at the same time it's not bright orange, but again, more like dried, sugared orange slices. You can also smell the malt. It's not the brightest aroma I've found in a pilsner but it's OK. Very nice so far. The flavor is more citrusy, not candyish, and there's some lemon-lime to it and a bit of raspy citrus pith. There's some grassiness as well, at least in the finish. That's interesting as some European, and even American made pilsners have that same lemon & grassy thing going on, and yet this is different. Haha, I got more of that orange candy in the burp, and now I'm tasting it more in the flavor itself. It's not sweet though, just sweetish, most likely coming from the grainy malt. It's got a median bitterness, and it finishes mainly dry with some of those grassy and orange-like hops lingering, and then the bitterness rising as the sweetish malt fades. The head has dropped, and in fact it started dropping fairly quickly, but there's also some nice lacing left behind. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp, as it should be. I'll say, first off, that it's a pleasant glass of beer that's nicely balanced all around. Secondly, it's interesting. It's certainly not what I'm accustomed to but that could always change. And peoples tastes may need to change to accommodate global warming; of course I think Pacific northwest hops will be safe for a while. Very nicely done! Certainly worth trying.

A thanks to the prince of pilsner, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, grassy, some grains. Taste is surprisingly hoppy for the style, lemons, some malts and grassiness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, but not what I expect from a pilsner.

From Decervecitas. In Teku glass. At lunch, with fries with eggs + turkey steaks. Canned 25 May. In nose it has some interesting notes, but in mouth fails, with a metallic and detergent-like point that reminds me ambar ipa, although fortunately much less pronounced that there

Pours a hazy gold color. 1/2 inch head of a white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of pale malt, yeast, slight wheat, hint of sweet malt, and floral hops. Fits the style of a German Pilsner. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of pale malt, yeast, slight wheat, hint of sweet malt, hint of pine, and floral hops. Overall, good appearance, light body, and good blend.

A: Pours a yellow color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a nice cap that leaves plenty of lacing

S: Grass, citrus, and some earthiness up front along with a light maltiness and some bready notes

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the grassy, floral, and citrusy hops and then goes into the bready malt notes and a bit of sweetness. Finishes with lingering floral notes

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. On the smooth side

O: A super drinkable pilsner that is nicely balanced while letting the hops show through

Poured from 12-ounce can into a pilsener flute. Clear light golden-colored body, with three fingers or so of thick white head that eventually settled to a thin ring. Aromas and flavors are very malt forward, with grain, biscuit, and a little light caramel for depth and sweetness. This provides a nice canvas for the hops, which add tropical fruit notes, orange, lemon, and lime, Good carbonation, medium body, and a moderately dry finish with a little bitterness and malty goodness lingering on the palate. Another outstanding offering from the Southern Hemisphere variety pack!

Appearance: Semi-cloudy golden, with a huge head of white suds. Beautiful lace!

Aroma: Nice mix of citrus fruity hops and malts.

Taste: Big citrus and fruity hops work alongside an almost sweet malty underbelly. Finishes with a tinge of bitter, almost honeyed maltiness. Enjoyable with no faults here. Solid.
