Anniversary Ale (2007-2009)Anniversary Ale (2007-2009)
Notes: Brewed to celebrate 27 years of the pioneering of the craft beer movement, this beer is an American Style IPA with a distinct Sierra Nevada twist; a generous amount of Cascade hops to produce a big fragrant pine and citrus hop aroma, which is balanced by the sweetness of two row pale and caramel malt, and finished with additional Cascade dry-hopping for good measure. Anniversary Ale is a medium-bodied, well-hopped ale that finishes with a slight malt sweetness. Released August 2007, 2008, and 2009; same beer.

A: Pours an amber color with a big bubbly head. moderate lacing.

S: A big citrusy hops aroma. Is it possible to smell bitterness?

T: Saturated with hops taste. Citric and vegetal flavors rounded out by a crisp bitterness.

M: Light-bodied with plenty of carbonation. A bit fizzy.

D: Nothing special, but this is a solid drink everyday kind of IPA. Very nice.

Pours a clear coppery amber color with 3 fingers of frothy off-white head. Good lasting retention and lots of sticky lacing. Smells of citrus, honey, toasted grain, and earthy hops. Tastes of grapefruit and lemon zest up front followed by a bit of honey sweetness and grainy bread malts before a nice bitter earthy and spicy hop finish with some pepper tones. Medium in body with great carbonation. Lots of different hop flavors and just enough malt character to balance it out with a good dry bitter finish. Good stuff, refreshing, low in alcohol, easy to drink, and different enough from their other offerings.

Pours amber color with an orange hue. Small foamy head with a nice amount of carbonation.

Scent is balanced well; malts, hops, and citrus come together to make for a good scent, but not particularly impressive.

Taste is hoppy and malty, with some citrus and green tea similar to the scent. Nothing too special here either, just some Sierra Nevada goodness.

Mouthfeel is clean and slightly pinching, refreshing.

Drinks easily, a good one to sit down and relax with.

While I can't really rave about this beer, I can say that it is a damn good, and I recommend it to IPA lovers.

Light amber with medium head and fair amount of lacing.

Aroma of malts, some hops but not much.

Taste is a little stale since the case I bought was already six months old. Can taste al little malt and general ale flavors. Not much for hops.

Mouthfeel is average medium.

At only 5.9%, and considering the lack of hoppy flavors/aroma, this more like a regular ale than an IPA.

However, all that being said, the stash I purchased was sitting on the shelf for the past six months, so it was not exactly fresh. Would try again, only fresh next time.

12oz. bottle

Pours a clear copper color with a creamy white head that maintains. Thick lacing on the glass.

Aroma is a fantastic blend of citrusy Cascade hops with a mild caramel malt background. Really fresh and inviting.

Taste is a fantastic balance of hops and malt. The citrusy Cascade hops are dominant, but there is a consistent background of caramel malt that maintains a superb balance. Medium hop bitterness throughout. Finishes quite clean with a tasty lingering hop taste.

Medium body, creamy texture, well carbonated.

What a fantastic anniversary brew, maybe the best anniversary brew I've had from any brewery. I could easily drink multiple pints of this beauty. Get it while it lasts and hope that they use this recipe as a replacement for their standard IPA.

12 oz bottle.
Appearance -A nice orange amber pour with ¼ inch of head in my tulip. Significant lacing and a ½ inch head that stuck around for several minutes.

Smell -A little malty nose, with lots of citrus and pine aroma, but not overpowering.

Taste -A great citrus/pine hop character with a bit of malty sweetness. A piney finish with yet more maltiness. .Yummy

Mouthfeel -Pretty high carbonation and a medium body.

Drinkability- I could session this one all night (and just might).

Comments- My wife's favorite beer. Appropriate considering that today is...wait for it...our anniversary!

Reviewed on 8/2/08. Bottle, 2008. Pours a clear orange with a thick light tan head that leaves nice, thick lacing on the glass. Aroma of nice citrus hop oils, some pine. Flavor of hoppy zest, a nice sweet malt base, lemon, citrusy hops. This is a tasty beer and I especially like the nice sweet malt balance with the citrusy hops. Yum!

I saw this as gold in colour and hazy with red / orange highlights. The small bubble carbonation was promising as was the one finger solid white head with very nice lacing. Impressive hoppy nose, cascades as written on the label. I smelled citrus fruit rind, marmalade, spiciness. There is a pronounced hoppy taste, warm / heat in the mouth, enough malt to balance it nicely. The finish is dry-bitter, still some citrus dry fruit lingering, a bit cider-like in some respects but with substantive body and balanced acidity. Very, very tasty. The almost 6% alcohol blends well in the mix, major refreshment value as well as great, lively taste and dramatic presence. I've had quite a few Sierra Nevada products in the past before I began to review critically and they rate highly in my books, always a memorable experience.

Undated 12 oz. stubby bottle with a teal and evergreen label that has a drawing of a Sierra Nevada brew kettle looking out of a window at the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range. The small neck label contains a brief sentence about the beer. It is undated, but there is a bottle code over the barcode. It's just a bunch of random numbers and letters that the average consumer can't read. It was poured into a Victory pint glass.

This Sierra Nevada beer poured a hazy and very carbonated golden tangerine orange color. Sitting on top of this golden brew was a wonderful thick and creamy 1 inch rocky head of white foam. This beautiful head of foam had excellent slow retention that left behind a 3/4 of an inch creamy white film and a ton of milky white streaks of lace around the glass. A top notch appearance!

Those Cascade hops were just pouring out of the bottle and into my nose. In the aroma, they were more crispier than bitter. Hiding behind all of those crispy Cascade hops was a hint of tart grapefruit, a dash of pine, a few wild flowers, a speck of malted tea leaves, a splash of coriander, and a subtle touch of toasted malts at the end. Great aroma! A pleasure to smell!

The taste kicks right off the bat with those crispy Cascade hops. In the taste, these Cascade hops were a little less crispier and more on the floral side. After the Cascade hops leave, the taste then goes on the toasted front with ruby red grapefruit, a splash of coriander, a little lemon zest, and a hint toasted malts. I'm not sure how they made all of those citrus flavors toasted, but Sierra Nevada managed to do it. I thought the taste was done after the malts, but then the Cascade hops showed up once more and they were crispier than ever!

This 5.9% beer was not light bodied at all. It was more on the medium bodied side. This beer featured a crispy and floral aftertaste of Cascade hops, toasted malts, a splash of coriander, and a hint of wild flowers.

Wow! What a nice beer! I didn't expect Sierra Nevada to disappoint me, but this was different. I loved this little flavorful crispy beer. I would love to buy more of this delicious beer. If you like your Sierra Nevada beers, then you better try this one out. It won't disappoint!

A- Pours a cloudy golden color with a nice, frothy, 2 finger head.

S- Wheat, slightly hoppy, somewhat faint.

T- Lots of piney hops all the way through. Deep bready, wheaty malt undercurrent.

M- Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

D- I find this beer to be extremely drinkable. Another winner from SN.

Pours a clear copper color with a big off-white head that slowly sinks into the beer, leaving sticky lacing behind. Aroma is grapefruit and pine with a slight maltiness. Perfect mouthfeel IMO. Taste is slightly sweet, but the grapefruit and bitterness from the hops cover up most of the malt. Drinkability is great (on my third one as I write this). Overall, I'm very impressed.

Got this on tap at Dicky's Wild Hare in Ft. Wayne. Brought to me it retained just a little bit of head and presented with a bright amber crisp color. The aroma was that of hops and slightly piney. Tasted like it looked. a light flavor that wasn't thick and had some hop action goin on. Wasn't a fan of the finish that this ale presented. Just a little too bitter for me. Not a bad beer though and easily drinkable.

Had this on-tap at Frisco Grille in Columbia, MD.

The beer poured a deep amber with a thin white head into a pint glass. The aroma was the classic SN profile of fresh, piney hops - heavenly. The taste was clean and crisp, with nice hop flavor, bitterness, and malt sweetness througout - a wonderfully balanced beer. Another great anniversary brew from SN.

It's a very attractive beer, with lacing that stood out as exceptional, but it has nothing on Celebration and Torpedo.

I didn't feel like the taste was all that complex. For me it sort of stayed one grassy-orange and biscuity note from the beginning to the end. The orange character was interesting--I'm not sure what hop that comes from, but it's tasty!--but didn't snap in the mouth enough. Everything seemed sort of rounded off and blended together, which made for a smooth drinker but not a memorable one.

A beautiful amber color poured from the bottle into a pint glass, with about a 2 finger head that dissipates to a thin film of foam and creates some lackluster lacing as you drink it.

Smells like sweet malts and flowers, but a very weak aroma overall.

Taste is initially of caramel malt, then transforms into a little hop kick in the middle and outside of your tongue as it goes down your gullet. However the overall taste is a bit weak, as there's not much depth. But the initial flavors make up for the lack of the full flavor profile.

Mouthfeel is very nice, with noticeable carbonation.

Drinkability wise, this could easily be a 5/5, but the emptiness your mouth feels after drinking it takes it down a .5 point--if that makes much sense.

Still a very nice beer from a great brewery.

SN's one of my favorite brewers and I've become a bit of a hophead, so this was a must-have item.

Pours a medium to dark bronze. It's certainly not as dark as a brown ale, but it's a step beyond a typical APA or IPA. Head is there in full force and it'll lace the glass like few others will.

Smell is a citrus hop wave. It's not overpowering as there's a caramel bready presence, too...but the hops are the star of the show.

The flavors start off sweet and bready, shockingly enough, but then the hops hit. They're not the strong bittering floral hops like you might expect, as these are more citrus. The flavor reminds me a little bit of ODell's IPA.

Mouthfeel is a little thick and foamy, but it's nice for the cooler weather.

Drinkability is limited by the availability of the beer right now. Beyond that, there's also something about it that just makes one enough. I'm not sure if it's just the big malt/hops combo or the thick body. Either way, it suffers a little.

With all that said, this is still a good beer and one worth seeking out while you can. I wish Sierra Nevada replace their current "normal" IPA with items like this and Celebration Ale.

12oz bottle, served in a pint glass.

A - clear, orange color with a fizzy, light tan head that thinned out to a ring, leaving little to no lace.

S - very good cascade hop aroma (pine/citrus). I couldn't smell any malt.

T - delicious brew. Strong hop bitterness upfront, malt makes itself known, with a bitter, dry finish. Great hop burps!

M - medium bodied, very good carbonation.

D - good drinkability, at just under 6% abv, a few of these are a very tasty treat.

Final Note: I'm glad they bottled this year's Anniversary Ale and I'm glad my beer store has it in stock. I will buy more of this before they run out.

12oz bottle

Pours a murky brown, orange, gold color with a small peachy white head that leaves some notching on the glass. Not a real booming nose, but whats there is definitely pleasant. Bright citrusy hops, lemon zest and some cracker like malts dwelling beneath. Initially upon sipping, you're thinking that this beer is bitter as hell! But once the brew coats the tongue and warms after a few sips its really quite hard to stop drinking. The hops are an interesting blend of earthy, herbal bitterness and a grapefruit bomb. Sweet malts ride shotgun but are there in balancing support. Long sweet hoppy bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied, bright carbonation and damn drinkable. Much better than last years if you ask me.

A - A bit of chill haze in a copper/amber liquid. Good solid creamy head that lasts.

S - Lots of pine and grapefruit in the nose backed by solid malts.

T - Very hoppy, very strong grapefruit flavour and some orange. A bit acidic up front. Fairly strong finishing bitterness, but takes a back seat to the hoppy flavour. Substantial malt for balance.

M - Slick oily body but not heavy. Lower carbonation is nice.

D - Very nice. Almost a casked-like quality to this I think. a good hoppy ale with a nice malty balance.

After working on my Hydraulics lab for like...ever with my lab partner at school...sharing this beer with a buddy of mine was a perfect ending to my day. Thanks PatronWizard/Mauerhan for this beer.

A: A light copper color with an intense amount of head. Lacing was very nice and was noticeable after I had finished my beer.

S: A subtle piny/grassy aroma.

T: A somewhat sweet/malty flavoring with light bitter kick at the end.

M: Typical for an IPA (Medium-body).

D: The thing I probably enjoyed the most about this beer is how easy it was to drink. The subtle taste of the beer, along with its good balance, enhanced this particular quality.

Overall: One of those beers that everyone would probably enjoy. Especially for people who think IPA's are too bitter...this is very subtle for those who fit in that category...and just enough for hop heads like me to notice and enjoy this style beer.

SN always make a good beer, and this anniversary ale is no different. The taste is a bit grassy in the mouth for me, but the NW hop is clearly in the nose. The grass lingers rather than a clean hop bitterness. Bought of six pack, and just fine that I did, but I won't buy another one.
