Ordered this at the Sierra Nevada Brewery on my last night in Chico: Thursday, September 17, 2009 the year of our Lord. I only had time for one beer, and what a great beer I had! The following review is written from notes.
Served in a Sierra Nevada imperial pint glass.
Appearance: Body appeared to be just plain brownish goldenrod at first, but when illuminated it turned bright peach with honey-colored accents! On top of that, it was hazy as hell - just what I was hoping for. When it was first handed to me, a generous inch of white foam sat on top. This eventually settled to a creamy, patchy cap. As the beer descended, the head left thick, bubblebath-like notches on the walls of the glass. Nice.
Smell: Whole grain barley with light caramel and grassy notes. This was supposed to be a hopped-up version of Best Bitter Ale. Sure didn't smell that way though!
Taste: "Oooo wee! That's one tasty bitter", claims my notes. And indeed, it was. The solid grainy base was balanced perfectly by the additional hops. The Cascades produced a mild citrus tang throughout, while the Chinooks came in for a salty, bitter kick that followed each sip. In addition to this, the cask added a layer of rich woodiness that wouldn't have been found in the tap version. Light caramelly sweetness also played a role. There was a lot going on in this one, but it was all balanced beautifully.
Mouthfeel: Creamy and oh so smooth. The carbonation was enough to produce the lightest little bite at the end of each sip, which opened the door for the dry hops to lay down some bitterness. Very malty and chewy, but only the body was nowhere beyond medium. Awesome.
Drinkability: I would have ordered this all night if I could have, but sadly I had to get back and pack my things. This went down like water. I really hope they decide to make this again someday.
