Alpha Hop brewer Jeff has long wanted to get this idea from his brain into barrels. “I truly love PB&J sandwiches as a 48-year-old” Jeff says, and he'll still bring them to work for an easy, tasty lunch. A blonde ale with malted oats and wheat malt provides the bready, biscuity foundation for a jammy 10-month transformation inside tawny port barrels. Raspberry puree, in the barrels and conditioning tank, blends with a late addition of natural peanut butter extract for a smooth sipper. Jeff aimed for subtle peanut butter aroma and flavor, both of which show up as your glass warms. Raspberry pops on the nose, while the barrel character on the backend delivers a grape-like signoff.

Body poured a cloudy amber brown with a one finger off white head. The first smell was the raspberry, then the peanut aroma kicked in. An interesting taste of slightly sour raspberry but the peanut butter is evident. Fizzy mouthfeel and a bit on the thin side. Sometimes you get these beers from out of left field that advertise adjuncts you don't usually find in brews and they aren't executed very well. However, SN did very well in executing this PBJ blonde ale. You can discern the jelly and the peanut butter in both the smell and taste. Not something in which I would buy a six pack, but an enjoyable interesting change of pace in a beer. I liked it.

So, I guess this is a beer. To the brewers credit, it tastes exactly as it's described. You get the raspberry taste first, followed by the peanut butter, and at the end, you kind of get a beer taste. In that respect, it's well balanced which I always admire, but for me, this is not what I'm looking for in a blonde ale or a beer in general. Also, while it was aged in port barrels, I didn't get any barrel notes. I drank two of them, but the other four will probably just sit in the fridge until someone visits!

I picked up Alpha Hop Society Release #3 at the Mills River SNBC outlet 9-14-21. Six 12.7 oz bottles were included.
Beer poured a jammy peanut butter purple-brown with a very nice head with the original pour.
Nose is nice, subtle notes of the raspberry and peanut butter adjuncts.
Taste follows the nose with a subtly decent sized pale malt base that incorporates a subtle touch of raspberry and peanut butter. Finishes a tad sweet but have to believe the port barrel aging for 10 months lends some tannins to help balance this out.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and pretty smooth.
Overall this is well crafted. One in a session is plenty and is sharable with someone who has a sweet tooth but is not necessarily a beer drinker!
