Innovation brewer David Barrett had a vision of Caribbean dark rum. Leaving the kettle, this kviek beer met blackstrap molasses in the hop back, and during active fermentation David dry-hopped with tropical varieties “to give the yeast some fun stuff to play with.” Then it all spent 6 months in rum barrels from Colombia. All David could think about? His childhood VHS of Romancing the Stone, a story set in Colombia where the villain Colonel Zolo “gets his hand bit off by a crocodile, and I respect him for that,” David says.
This beer’s an adventure, to say the least. Aromas of plum and raisin usher in flavors of toasty oak, warm sweetness and fruity esters, with a slightly tart and clean finish.
Recommended aging time: up to 2 years.

Picked up my six 375 ml bottles the first of March from Mills River. Consumed bottle #1 for review 4-9-22.
Beer poured reddish brown with a really nice head with the original pour.
Nose initially was very rum barrel forward and now is more of floral hops.
Taste was a lighter malt base enhanced by the rum barrel that lends some coconut. Finishes with a touch of pine and citrus, very balanced.
Mouthfeel is light bodied and neither smooth or refreshing.
Overall an interesting beer and not too shabby. Was a bit worried initially the rum would overtake the base beer but actually fits in well!
