Baltic Porter aged in bourbon barrels with cinnamon

Like a great rock band, this beer is more than the sum of its parts. An expressive Baltic porter headlines Hittin’ the Note, aged in cinnamon whiskey barrels for more than a year. Topped off with dessert stout for extra body, the resulting blend saw a final addition of cinnamon sticks just days before tank transfer. The aroma, surprisingly, is light on spice; instead it’s dried cherry, pipe tobacco, and barrel character that stand out to Alpha Hop brewer Nick Ison. The flavor is where “the [oak’s] vanilla and the cinnamon really come into balance,” Nick says. Let your glass warm and lock into a groove with Hittin’ the Note.

A deep chocolate brown body with a light tan head. Smell was amazing in that I could detect most of the added elements. Almonds hit my nose first, then cocoa with a hint of coconut. After a few minutes, cinnamon became dominant, then more almond. Fun! Taste was mostly cinnamon with some bourbon notes. Mouthfeel was a bit on the light side of medium, with medium high carbonation. I usually avoid beers with cinnamon, but enjoyed this one. A well crafted barrel aged porter

Picked up 6-12.7 oz bottles at the SNBC Mills River location 5-26-22. Consumed for review 8-3-22.

Beer poured dark brown with a nice tan head.

Nose is very good, a nice mix of cinnamon, chocolate, and vanilla.

Taste follows the nose where the base beer assimilates the adjuncts nicely and the cinnamon, chocolate and vanilla shine nicely. The bourbon rounds the finish out with a ever so light touch of heat which balances the components nicely.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

Overall one of my 2 or 3 favorite releases in the last 2 years!
