I am not sure why American brewers think a wee heavy should be cloyingly sweet. Is it just that we use a lot of American crystal malts? Anyway, Loch, Hop, and Barrel, could have been a pretty nice beer, but it's got enough sugar flavors to mix with coffee.
Diacetyl, roasted , and toffee-like kettle caramelized flavors. So much sugar that you might think you taste some fruitiness, but in fact, the yeast profile is very clean, as it should be for a Scottish ale. (In fact, the brewers used a lager yeast, which contributes a nice crispness once the beer has warmed a bit.)
Figs, raisins, caramel, lots of sweetness and alcohol, with a little graininess, noble hops, and some molasses. Toastiness present, but overpowered by sweetness. Lingering caramel and hop flavor.
Low carbonation
For all the sugar and caramel flavors, the body comes in at a surprising medium.

On tap at Blind Lady Ale House served into a tall flute-tulip like glass.
A - Very Scotch ale like with a nice ruby red colour. Not a ton of head but was nice a foamy with an off white reddish colour.
S - Nice carmels coming thru with just a hint of the Lager yeast used in this beer. Some oak coming thru too and final hops - a surprise for the style but not the description.
T - A very nice balanced scotch ale. I think the use of oak in the hopback took away some of the bite of the hops making this much more true to style then you might suspect. Booze was there but not taking center stage.
M - Slight creaminess befitting a scotch that faded on the tongue.
D - I thought this was a great little scotch ale. You don't see a whole lot of them these days and frankly, some of the British Isle versions we get in the states seem past their peak. Fun little experiment with oak in the hop back and a higher hopping rate then the style is supposed to have. Not sessionable but a fun little beer.
