Along the Wild and Scenic Forks of the Kern lurks a stretch of water known simply as “The Gauntlet”. With no good way around this section, one can only point downstream and face the challenge head-on. Get separated from your boat and you are in for a long and dangerous swim. Emerge unscathed and you will have nothing but smiles for days. This Imperial Oatmeal Stout is a complex matrix of oats, roasted malts, cacao and peanut butter. While smoother than its namesake rapid, this Gauntlet of flavors is equally as enjoyable once you make it to the bottom.

22oz bottle. Wax over cap. No dating information found.
Black colored body, with a mahogany back lit edge. Beige head reduces to an island and a ring. No lacing.
Aroma roasted malts, and chocolate. Peanut aroma is hidden down deep. Bourbon barrel is there as sort of a black licorice note.
Taste is roasted malts and heavy with dark chocolate. Again the peanut component is there but hidden. Sweet black licorice. Whiskey barrel and oak. Aftertaste is barrel wrapped chocolate.
Seems to be a thin mouth feel, but gets thicker as it processes through the mouth. Higher ABV% is well hidden. Supportive carbonation.
Subtle use of the peanut, but good mix with the chocolate and barrel.

No bottling date (released on 1/22/21, so presumably bottled within a few days of that date); consumed on 8/28/21

Pours a void-like jet-brown/inky black body capped with a finger of short-lived, sudsy, dark khaki foam and a steady, subtle effervescence; no cap persists on a surface surrounded by a razor-thin collar and no lasting lacing holding to the walls of the glass.

Aroma highlights chunky peanut butter interwoven with bittersweet dark cacao nibs, advancing through a mild, cleanly integrated whiskey character to a peak of Swiss dark chocolate bar accented by soft residuals from whiskey-tinged oak barrel.

Taste opens with a fusion of chunky peanut butter and dark chocolate bar upfront, soon breaking down base malt profile elements of black bread, milk chocolate, and spent coffee grounds through the mid-palate; burnt vanilla levels against a touch of roasted malts, while tinges of boozy whiskey and oak ultimately pronounced and fade with the finish.

Mouthfeel offers a medium body carrying a semi-slick, semi-gritty texture while sporting a lighter carbonation; a somewhat oily consistency contributes a brief, boozy tingling as a warmth in the backdrop washes over the back end and a fading, residual char presents quietly through the swallow.

Lowkey barrel meets a deceptively expressive duo of peanut butter and chocolate, quietly phased into a steady malt base with loose whiskey accents; subtlety and warmth define this pleasant and understated sipper.
