We took our award-winning Citra DIPA recipe and folded in a new hop from New Zealand formerly known as HORT 4337 and now named Nectaron. With its peach and guava notes, this hot new variety pairs perfectly with the fruit-forward characteristics of Citra.

Can poured into a Kern River Brewing Co pint glass
A: Pours golden amber with a frothy pale khaki head that settles to a firm layer and laces quite nicely.
S: Nectaron takes the lead over the Citra on the nose. Juicy tropical and stone fruit plus a touch of the signature grape candy, followed by floral notes and citrus, held together with biscuity malt and caramel sweetness.
T: Ripe tropical and stone fruit, pineapple, nectarine, mango, guava, passion fruit, and a touch of grape candy, juicy citrus that emerges more as it warms, tangerine, lemon lime, and a hint of grapefruit, light resinous tones, floral notes, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.
M: A little on the fuller side of medium body, moderate carbonation.
O: It's been a hot minute since I've had the original (Note to self: need to revisit) so I can't really give a comparison between the two and what the Nectaron adds.
As a stand alone beer, it's delightful. Tropical and stone fruit leads, but citrus catches up. Sits a touch sweet, but it's still pretty balanced. Dangerously drinkable for 8.5%. I think the Nectaron steals the show a little bit, but I'm not complaining. Super tasty DIPA.

I’m fighting a battle even bigger than “The Great One.” I was on a battleship, doing battle ship things. Kaboom! Chaos everywhere. A tornado at sea… And then I got a break. And we docked in Australia where I had a solid night with an outback hottie. That’s this beer to me.

Packaged on 3/8/23 - enjoyed on 3/24/23 - poured from a pint can into a Duralex tumbler.
Slightly hazy amber body with a lasting ivory collar and surface slick. Fine sandy lacing; average retention.
Hints of pineapple, tangerine, and peach in the nose. Gentle tropical/orange with some crackery malt. Hints of white wine/gooseberry/passion fruit.
Tart/sweet palate entry - crushed orange, pineapple shake, and fresh bread. Moderate, lingering bitterness suggesting white grapefruit and a hint of chives. Medium-dry finish with some a touch of Grand Marnier and some residual minerality. Dank aftertaste (as if I brushed with hop infused toothpaste).
Medium-full body, oily, creamy, yet cutting. Warming yet refreshing.
More than the sum of its parts, a bit sweeter/more tropical than Citra, though still very similar. A superior Imperial WC IPA.

Appearance: Very slightly cloudy amber-yellow color with a fairly small-sized white head that slowly faded.
Smell: Citrus, tropical fruit aromas and moderate pine aromas. All good here but not as upfront as some other Kern offerings.
Taste: Moderate citrus notes, mild tropical fruit notes and mild pine notes. I get a faint hint of some garlic like notes also. The beer has a strong bitter hop backbone that results in a dry finish that counters the fruity notes nicely.
Mouth-feel: On the light side of medium-bodied with a modest level of carbonation. The mouthfeel is spot on for an IIPA.
Overall: A good IIPA with a tasty hop flavor profile. I found the spring 2023 Citra and Citra Nectaron to be a bit less fruit forward than some of the other years, but both are still good beers.

On tap at the brewery for Citra release fall 2022
Lovely clear, copper-tan color. Served ice cold so not much of a head. Fruitier nose than original Citra,, more tropical.
Flavors are a bit sweeter, perhaps due to the higher ABV. Lots of tropical notes that aren’t in the original, with a distinct note of apricot.
Not sure if I like this more than OG, but I might. It’s throwing back fast…
