The first release in the ongoing series of farmhouse beers, Grisette is country table ale that, historically, was served to the miners of Hainaut province of Southern Belgium. “Grisette” translates to “little gray” and while the provenance of the term is a little cloudy, we’re willing to bet that those miners looked a “little gray” after a long day digging coal and stone out of the ground. And what better brew to have sated their thirst than a light bodied, dry, saison-like ale. Luckily, you won’t have to spend a day toiling in the dark to enjoy our version. Crack one after your evening commute and be thankful that you have carpal tunnel instead of black lung.

8/30...pours darkish gold, dirty, small bubble fizzy white foam. loud pop when the cork is pulled. Yeasty funky nose. Faint. Taste is a light lemony citrus blend that eases into a small peppy bitter. Simple. Perfect.

Lacking on any real flavor with an outrageous price tag to boot.

375ml Smuttlabs bottle.

Pours clear straw yellow with a small amount of head for the duration.

Clove, bubblegum, and a trace of cut grass in the nose.

Light bodied and thinnish.

Crisp and a bit of biscuit on the palate with Belgiany phenols and faint spice.

Finishes quick and dry with a firm bitterness.

Quaffable and pretty tasty, but definitely a "light" beer in the Belgian vein.

A: Pours a golden color with 2 fingers of head that lasts for a while before fading down to a thin cap that leaves some nice lacing

S: Yeasty phenolic notes up front with some fruitiness and spices

T: Follows the nose. Very yeasty and phenolic with ripe fruit and peppery spiciness. Finishes with lingering peppery notes and phenols

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: Lots packed into 3.5%. Very drinkable. Definitely worth trying

Bottle. Corked and caged. Body is mostly clear and a tarnished golden color. Big, airy, fluffy head. Webs of lacing. For a beer clocking in at 3.5% ABV, this one is plenty potent in terms of aroma. Phenolic. Spicy with a bit of bruised apple. Yeast dominates the smell. Flavor is better. The Belgian yeast is less omnipotent. Phenolic essence is more subdued. It's tangy. Not tart but it's close. It has some funkiness. Also a lemony component. Tastes a bit like mineral water wth a stress on the minerals. Light bodied. High carbonation. Interesting beer. It makes me think that this is something close to what farmers drank hundreds of years ago. Rustic.

From the 12.7 oz bottle dated 11/4/14. Sampled on January 18, 2015. The label says drink fresh so I am drinking it about 9 weeks after it came out so that might have tainted my overall experience.

Yellow pour with fizzy white head that gradually dissolves to a ring. Lively carbonation.

At first it comes across as a sour ale. In general I pick up a thin veil of toasted biscuit, yeast, and grassy hops.

The body is thin and watery. Rather disappointing that. It is a 3.5 abv though.

In many respects this tastes more like a grainy pilsener rather than a toasty Saison. They call it a country table ale. I'd agree with that. Good for the table with dinner but not one of the better choices on the SmuttLab menu.
