Style: Belgian Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Called "Proefbier" (tasting beer) during development of the recipe, this beer is now known as "De Manke Monnik" (the limping monk). The Manke Monnik recipe has been revised since October 2012 and now uses pale ale malt in place of pilsner malt resulting in a slightly darker beer which also seems slightly more bitter than before.

I guess the deal with this one is that it’s not a Belgian - they state very clearly that’s it’s an Amsterdam Tripel. Well... That must explain things!

I was limping through Amsterdam and just had to stop walking. The first bar was right there! On the water! And it’s a brewpub!

So... 25cl on tap in a De Manke Monnik chalice. Beautiful deep golden amber that’s nice and clear. Served with a fluffy white head - overflowing - of course.

Sweet and smooth, lightly spiced (coriander and cardamom?).

So... With all of that good I still pan it and probably won’t have one again. It’s good but holy cow does it it ever leave the weirdest, most unpleasant aftertaste... Maybe like after you just eat orange pith or something, you know?

============

Edit. Sorry! Looks like I have a little cold! I’ve bumped overall back up given that it is hard to imagine that the aftertaste is really the beer! Other than that part (probably not the beer itself!) I really enjoyed it! (And the staff were very friendly!)

On-tap at De Bekeerde Suster, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A: The beer is relatively clear golden yellow in color. It poured with a half finger high white head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles in the center of the glass, a collar around the edge and lacing down the sides.
S: Light to moderate aromas of banana esters are present in the nose along with hints of candi sugars.
T: The taste has flavors of banana esters with hints of candi sugars and spices and yeast. The flavor improves as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes a bit strong but is nice to sip. The alcohol is rather well masked from the taste.

L...very slight Amber golden colored with a nice 2 cm head in a glass chalice

S..slight Belgian yeasty smell, bit this is Dutch and certainly not powerful

T...Fair fruit and spice balance... coriander? Pleasant enough to mask the alcohol...sipper

F...smooth...slight alcohol puckering...

O...a good triple that drinks easy and is perfect for sitting while watching the people and canal a block removed from the red light district. Satisfying, good triple that is a good entry for "Belgian" triple virgins.

Really smooth and easy to drink for a tripel. I really enjoyed, it felt very well balanced, just maybe a bit light for the style, but still a very solid beer. Overall its well worth a try! Most of the brewery "de bekeerde sister" beers were very well balanced.

This is one of the four offerings from De Bekeerde Suster (the reformed nun).

It was served on tap into their chalice.

A - This is a hazy blonde tripel with a nice pillowy head. Lacing was very good.

S - Unfortunately not much here. A bit of yeastiness and apricots, but it is very faint.

T - A nice clean tripel. Not overly fruity, estery or yeasty. Very round and balanced. A hint of apricots and hop bitterness are present as it warms. Perhaps slighly lacking in taste, but at only 7.2% it makes for a a very drinkablke tripel.

M - Very light and clean witha lingering bitterness.

D - Nearly a sesionable tripel if there is such a thing. This beer does not "wow" you my any means. But it has good balance and a pleasant taste. If you ever find yourself in Amsterdam, this beer and this brewpub would not be a bad choice.

On tap at De Bekeerde Suster, Amsterdam.

Pours dark gold with a white clingy collar. Crisp apple, flowers, and wax on the nose. Honey, caramel and fresh pear malts with grassy hops plus some earthy spice. Light clove finish, dry linger. Crisp, light, clean, no cloying, some cling.

Solid tripel, if a bit slight. Good but not great.

Pleasant but not extraordinary. It's nice to drink this one by the Brabantse Aap in Amsterdam.
