Our Cerveza with agave wasn't brewed just for the heat. It was brewed for a fiesta. Or after a nice siesta. Or really anything else you feel like doing. This Mexican-style lager brewed with earthy, sweet agave is a clean, crisp, easy-drinking beer that pairs perfectly with however you plan to spend your day,

L: Pours piss yellow with a foamy white head with a fair amount of retention.
S: Very grainy, floral hops, faint amount of agave.
T: Taste certainly follows the nose, I feel like the intended agave flavor is actually more like honey.
F: Medium-Light bodied with a clean, crisp finish & high carbonation.
O: Decent beer, certainly unique & worth the try.

Bottled May 8th so I will be as gentle as I can be.

Pours a clear, without any floaties, straw yellow, pretty decent head of foam, lacing is also not too shabby. Some sweet notes, near zero bitterness.

The taste, I reckon, has suffered from the long time since it was bottled. Earthy, the pear nose is not very noticeable, really sweetish finish, near zero bitterness.

The body is substantial for a 4.5% abv beer.

I'm guessing that it was quite quaffable when it was fresh.

The smell has an earthy pear like aroma.

Poured from 12 oz can into pint glass. A 2" white head drops quickly with some mild lacing. Color is clear pale straw. Moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Mild aroma of lightly toasted malt and a hint of agave. Flavor is grainy, a sweetness like honey and some mild agave. Very minimal hop presence. Overall: nothing to write home about but quite enjoyable.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a very small, white head of foam. It smelled of caramel and fruity notes (I guess the agave). Sweet fruity taste with a caramel backbone.

Poured from a bottle: Very light in color with a small head. Smells of grain and malt. Flavors of grain, malt, maybe corn and a touch of sweetness that even it out nicely. Light and refreshing.

Spoetzl Brewery "ShinerCerveza de Verano"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "125 19 A-1 22:26"
$1.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is brewed with agave? That sounds good. Screw-off cap as well. It's poured a clear straw gold body beneath a short head of bright white that seems to be holding pretty firmly. The aroma is basic grainy malt. So far, so good - nothing unusual here. On to the flavor... it's basic, but the agave syrup does come through in the end giving it an additional touch of sweetness. I was going to say that I don't know how I feel about that but I've already decided that I like it. It gives it a little bit something different. I can have a basic Mexican lager any day, and was in fact drinking Pacifico and Modelo last week, but this is just that little bit more interesting. How much better is it than one of those, that's hard to say, but I'm going to go with not much. However, I believe that every beer has its place and time, and I certainly wouldn't turn down one of these in one of those times. So, back to the beer itself, there's not that much bitterness there, but neither does it get "sweet" or cloying. That's a pretty good trick to pull off in a beer that's got sugar added to it. The head, while never really that impressive to begin with, still covers almost the entire surface of the beer, which is good in general given the style, and there's some lacing so there's that as well. It's not much lacing, but I'll take any over none. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and it has a soft, fine-bubbled carbonation that leaves it creamy smooth. I can't lie, I tore right through this beer, it's incredibly easy to drink. This is a seasonal beer for the summer and summer has for the most part passed at this point but I'll certainly remember this next year when I need to pick up something for a bbq, party, or trip to the beach.

Oversized 24 oz. tall boy can

Appearance: Bright yellow glass with excellent clarity. Holds a thin cover of white head but doesn't lace the glass with foam.

Aroma: Corn, hint of DMS, a vegetal note I'm going to call agave. A little cracker malt and a hint of lemon peel.

Taste: Clean, base malt starts a little thin and grows into a sweet finish. Some corn flavor fits with a light peppery hop profile that goes a hint metallic, but it's not enough to ruin the party.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, low carbonation, pretty clean finish.

Overall: Nice! I'm no fan of agave (distill it for me and we'll talk), and there isn't much here which works well for me. The base beer is clean, well made, refreshing, and if not amazing tasting, certainly doesn't offend. I'd be happy with these at a pool side party or as a yard work reward. Aclamaciones!
