Off the Beaten Path 2 was inspired by the resurgence of heirloom grains being harvested and malted. Riverbend Malt House out of North Carolina did just this with the rye varietal, Wrens Arbuzzi. Fermented in stainless steel and bottle conditioned with our proprietary mixed Saison culture.

2017 "vintage". Opened December 2021.
Pours a cloudy yellow gold color with a small white cap that leaves minimal lacing on its way to complete dissipation.
Strong aromas of pear, apricot, lemon, grape skin, yeast, and rye malt. Some mild funk and cracked pepper.
The flavor has quite a bit of lactic acid, lemon, grass, and an entire barnyard of funk. There's some mild notes of green apple and pear with some peppery spice on the finish.
The feel is light bodied with moderately high carbonation. Surprisingly prickly and very dry. Easy to drink.
Overall, this is a very good farmhouse ale that has definitely held up over the last 4 years. It's rustic, yet citrusy and mildly tart. Nothing overly complex but would definitely try another year of this one.

Bottled in 2017, cracked open in 2021.
L: Pours a very-slightly-hazy pale orange-gold. Forms a slight half-finger of white foam that dissipates swiftly and entirely.
S: The nose is mildly funky, ripe with tart lemon and persimmon, with some soft peppery notes.
T: Opens with the tart lemon and persimmon promised by the nose, with some mild nigh-Brett funk swirling out of the background as it moves across the palate. Cracked pepper and spice notes join as it rolls towards the rear of the tongue, along with some mildly sour melon. The tart citrus fruits linger long after the swallow, with hints of the pepper.
F: Fairly light in body, with some prickly carbonation even after 4 years in the bottle.
O: A rather enjoyable experience.

Very lively dark yellow brew, tinged with orange. Until you pour in the yeast sediment, it's nearly transparent, with the vibrant bubble action the only thing standing in the way of a crystal clear appearance. With the yeast, it's cloudy and nearly opaque. Very good initial head production.
Brilliantly tart and rustic nose; if I didn't know better, I would definitely have guessed oak aging. Lemon, tannins, hay, must, a touch of vinegar.
The rye adds a slightly peppery malt character that balances out the tart and funk notes. There's an earthy, pungent, semi-sweet note to the malt base, not unlike pilsner malt. Lemon and tannins round out the profile, along with a funky, earthy, dirty yeast component. Some similarities to Brett funk on the palate.
Very lively and quite drinkable.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.
A: Very clear bright gold, though it does get moderately hazy when the bottom 1/3 of the bottle is poured into the glass. A good amount of visible carbonation, and a half-finger of white head fades quickly.
S: Lemon zest citrus, with maybe a touch of lactic tart. Cracker malts, some grassy and barnyard funk – but pretty conservative here. Grassy and citrus hops. Nice, but neither huge nor overly funky.
T: Lactic and citric tart, with a lemony citric bite. Clean cracker malts and a mild Brettanomyces dry funk – basement and herbal. Maybe a touch of Lactobacillus as well. Mild black peppery saison yeast near the swallow, along with citric lemony tart and a touch of coriander at the swallow, though this fades oddly abruptly.
M: A very light body...borderline watery. A huge amount of carbonation sensation, but not quite obnoxious. Low alcohol presence.
O: This was fine, but nothing to make it stand out, nor something I’d actively seek a repeat performance of. But it’s not a bad saison.

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch white head over a very bright and clear light golden body with no lacing. Head is gone immediately. Nice nose of rye malt and saison yeast with lemon, green apple, hay, and a bit of funk. Taste follows nose with an nice additional spicy tartness coming forward. Good feel and overall, yet another fine saison offering from Jackie O's. Cheers!

500 mL bottle. Pours a very pale clear golden until the yeasts clouds it up. Smells of lemon, yeast, soft doughy bread, and rye. Tastes very grainy. Lemon lime tartness. Rye and some yeast in the back end. Crisp and highly carbonated. Simple but very pleasant.

16.9oz bottle poured into a tulip
A: Yellow with a two-finger head
S: Tart, citrus, herbal, a bit of spice
T: Tart, lemon, a unique spice from the rye (white pepper, not as dark/bold as most), some coriander/herbs
M: Light-bodied, tart
O: One of the lighter/more interesting saisons I've had recently. I really like the unique rye & yeast blends used

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2017 vintage bottling. Pours slightly hazy pale golden straw color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lightly tart lemon, lime, citrus zest, peach, pear, pineapple, red/green apple, melon, white wine, hay, straw, herbal, grass, peppercorn, wheat, cracker, rye bread, leathery/musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/spicy yeast and light-moderate pale/rye malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart lemon, lime, citrus zest, peach, pear, pineapple, red/green apple, melon, white wine, hay, straw, herbal, grass, peppercorn, wheat, cracker, rye bread, leathery/musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Moderately peppery yeast spiciness and light tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, citrus zest, peach, pear, pineapple, red/green apple, melon, white wine, hay, straw, herbal, grass, peppercorn, wheat, cracker, rye bread, leathery/musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast and light-moderate pale/rye malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from tart/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly acidic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is an outstanding wild saison! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast and light-moderate pale/rye malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink; with the modestly tart/spicy/drying finish. Wonderful well rounded Brett complexity; with a solid pale/rye malt backbone. A very mild improvement over the first batch. Mostly on drinkability/mouthfeel. First batch was way too over carbonated. This also had more barnyard funk/tropical fruit. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Poured from a 500 mL bottle. Uncapping it gives off a burst of lemon and floral hops, like some disorienting hybrid of Orval and a fresh Pilsner Urquell. On the palate, one of the most subtle and light saisons I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. A very light tartness, just a squeeze of lemon, thank you much. Golden straw and a nice touch of peppery rye spice.
