I had a few cask drafts of this at the Amsterdam Ale House, who recently introduced a cask tap this month. The beer was very good. There were some refrigeration problems that I believe helped to bring out the flavors of the beer.

Appearance is a dark brown, mahogony. Very little head but it was on cak.

Aroma was of intense chocolate and dark roasts. Very strong and very good.

Flavor as well had a very intense chocolate character that was easy to drink in spite of what they referred to a seven percent alcohol by volume.

A very good beer on cask. I'd love to try it on co2 or in a bottle.

Light brown creamy head that leaves lacing on the glass. Very dark crimson body. Some noticeable bubbles.

Dark chocalate, caramel, coffee and toffee aromas. Smells quite nice.

Roasted coffee, chocolate, caramel and some dry metallic bitterness at the end. Very tasty.

Medium body, silky creaminess, moderate carbonation, it leaves the mouth feeling a little dry from the bitterness but the mouth is still moist.

This is a very nice porter. Very easy drinking -- it goes down so quickly -- just trying to nurse it is almost impossible since it's so smooth.

On draft at the brewery.

Poured a dark brown hue with mahogany highlights. There was a one finger foamy off white head, decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a soft sweetness and a pinch of cocoa.

The taste was way too sweet for a porter, with a chocolate icing type element.

The mouthfeel was toward the softer end offend style.

Overall a way too busy porter that suffers from a laconic carbonation and an off sweetness.

Enjoyed 2 mugs of this one at the brewery a day or two ago and now reviewing it via a 32 ounce growler pour. ($5 for 32 ounces, $7.50 for 64, reasonably priced beer, nice)

Pours near black, nice looking, loose and darker tan head. Decent retention, thick sheeting and better then average lace left behind.

Light dark chocolate, dusty dark grains for the nose.

This a tasty and well made porter, more smooth and dense dark chocolate notes, dark grains, with some drying bitterness on the back end. Nicely done.

Easy and very pleasant drinking porter, the best beer I can remember sampling from Defiant. Chocolate in place, in balance and providing some quality complexity.

Enjoyed this poured from a Cask at Spuyten Duyvil on 5/8/09

I saw this being poured for another patron and once I read the name on the chalkboard I had to have it.

Very dark beer with a nice brown head on top. Rich malty flavor. After swallowing a chocolate taste is left in the mouth which begs you to take another drink. Just wish I had gotten the chance to have another.

On tap at Bar East, NYC, NY on 4/4/09.

A - Dark brown body with lighter nut brown accents around the bottom and half a finger of creamy tan head that receded to a thin film and left some thick, sticky lace around the glass.

S - Roasted malt and chocolate notes with some sweet lactose and milky notes. Simple and straightforward aroma.

T - Roasty and malty, but sweet with milky, lactic and chocolate notes. Some earthy, woody hops appear in the backend to add some bitterness to the mix.

M - Medium bodied, although a tad thin and watery, but still fairly smooth and creamy overall. Softly carbonated mouthfeel. Finish is mostly bitter with some residual sweetness on the palate.

D - I wasn't sure what to expect because I never heard of this brewery before, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by this chocolate porter. This is a solid brew with enough flavor to keep me interested throughout the pint.

I had this on tap at the brewery in pearl river, served in a mug.

A - A murky walnut brown w/ a 1/2 inch tan headand translucent auburn shade at the base of the glass + top. The lacing is sticky and holds to the glass well

S - A roasty aroma w/ hints of dark fruit and bready yeast notes w/ mild cocoa scents

M - Dry nuts + toast w/ light yeastiness and creamy smoothness w/ fairly dry finish

T - The cocoa like mellow flavor compliments the porter's roasted sweet elements and the ale has a gentle pine hop flavor in the background. The nutty and toasted flavors last until the finish

D - A nice standard porter with mild hops and subtle cocoa notes adds up to very good drinkability. The flavors are well blended and this is an easy porter to knock back on a lazy afternoon.
