16oz glass at the ersatz brewpub.
This beer appears murky, dark, well, apricot amber colour, with the faintest of wispy, bubbly off-white head (I can't complain about the servers' propensity to fill 'em right up around here!), which leaves damned near nil terms of lace anywhere in the vicinity of the glass as we get this one going.
It smells of sugary pome fruit - more so than the lesser candied apricot sweetness - grainy caramel malt, a subtle pine and citrus bitterness, and minor leafy, weedy hops. The taste is still rather candied in its bearing - apricot and white peach - with a softer white grape juiceiness, generic bready caramel malt, understated west coast pine and citrus astringencies, free-range sugars, and tame earthy, leafy, and floral hops.
The bubbles are pretty understated in their meek and barely supportive frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and mostly smooth, the fruitiness not really capable of culpability, eh? It finishes off-dry, the apricot obviously having second thoughts about putting in full hours, and taking off early for the weekend, leaving the neutered IPA holding the bag, as it were.
Not a bad brew, truth be told, but the apricot really could have put in more than just a cameo appearance. Otherwise, this comes off as nothing more than a commendeered IPA, one a bit lesser for the experience.
