Type: Cask (20 oz pour)
Glass: Imperial Pint
From: ABC Brewpub
Price: $2.50 ( Happy Hour Special)

Appearance: Dark brown and almost opaque. The head was quite bubbly which was off-putting to me.

Smell: Dark chocolate and roasted malts. Nothing special for a porter

Taste: I was not a fan of the taste. It opened with roasted malts that kind of dominated the beer. Some hints of dark chocolate and a bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Pretty smooth which is the best part of the beer. A bit of a bitter aftertaste. The negative to the mouthfeel is the over carbonation that shows up in the head.

Overall: Obviously I didn't like this beer. It was too focused on the roasted malts with no other specialty to it. Arbor Brewing tends to be hit and miss for me and this one scores a miss

Reviewed from notes.

Poured from cask, this brings a nice dark body with a fairly substantial head and a good dose of lacing on the way down. Nose brings roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and some anise. Taste is the same with the flavors blending quite smoothly. Feel is nice, but not quite what I would hope the cask would do to the flavors, especially within the brewpub itself. Drinks quite well and was one of my favorite beers of the afternoon.

Personally I am not the biggest porter fan (huge stout fan) and this just felt like I was drinking a brick. Don't get me wrong, this beer tastes like youre drinking a hershey bar dipped in coffee and is tasty but I felt no buzz whatsoever. This is the kind of beer that will put you to sleep. I was in Ann Arbor to see Devendra Banhart sometime back and we stopped at the Arbor Brewpub. Bad Idea; this beer sucked the energy out of me. If I ever become a porter fan again I would highly recommend this beer but right now I just think it is too too rich.

A-Deep, dark brown/black with a thin tan head that held on strong and left spotty lace.

S-Somewhat smoky with some tobacco, licorice and a bit of chocolate.

T-Dark chocolate, raisin, licorice, currents all melding and struggling to be dominate. A dry roasty, smoky finish. All totaled a complex brew.

M-Full bodied, rich and lasting flavour. Nice, bitter roasted malt finish.

D-Quite tasty. Plenty of flavour and a nice, smooth creamy and full mouthfeel.

Draft at Arbor Brewing.

Poured dark brown hue with a light brown head that diminished slowly with good lacing. Complex good aroma of chocolate, smoke and sweet. Full body with creamy fuzzy texture. Good porter flavor with a smooth bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration.

My expectations where met.

Poured to a 4oz sample glass from the cask right in the pub. It was a thick chocolately brown with low carbonation and a small light brown head.

Smelled and tasted both of chocolately coffee. Not huge flavor but very pleasant. I enjoyed the cask pull at the "cellar temperature".

Definitely a drinkable beer--could have had a little more body.

On cask at ABC. Molasses black with a decent peanut brown head, my glass was overfilled so I'm not sure how much head there would have been with a proper draw. The nose is cold coffee and cocoa, not much else.

Cocoa, coffee, and molasses sweet malts all show up pretty strongly in the flavor. Leaves a roasty finish lingering. The mouthfeel of the beer is where it gets disappointing again, the carbonation is fairly flat and the overall feel of it is very thin. It really left me wanting more substance to the beer. Maybe this would be better on tap than on cask??

Overall this beer isn't bad, in fact it's a decent one to start the night off with, but you'll want to drink something with more body after. Maybe follow up with the Sacred Cow IPA if you're at ABC...

A good beer to put on pull, this falls beautifully and becomes a thin dark brown topped with a heavy dense cream head. The smell brings out nice toasted malt characters balanced nicely with a good bit of sweet malt and a layer of hops. Sipping at this brings plenty of enjoyable moments to savor the somehow dense flavor of light toast with a mild coffee finish with a quick bloom of hops. A good mouthfeel, I think I would prefer this on tap, but a very sessionable beer with room for others to come join the fun.

A keeper on cask here. Mocha head on top of very dark brown. Sessionable ABV. Well malted and the bias is on the sweeter side and so drinkable. Cocoa, coffee, mollasses, mild roastiness. Could have more aroma with all of these ingredients. Another day to consider this anything other than above average.

Had on cask at the ABC. My favorite that I tried there.
It's opaque black with a thick tan head, served pleasantly cool. Nose is a great blend of smoky malts, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is malts, coffee, and lingering toasted malts. Mouthfeel is very full and creamy. Drinkability is good. Nice offering!

Originally reviewed on January 18, 2006. On cask at brewpub. Deep dark murky browm, with a long sustaining heavy head of coffee. Deep cream and chocolate aroma, with a hint of cherries. Thin bodied! Majorly dissapointing. Body of the beer carries no flavor! Watery. Creamy chocolate and roasted chicory come through on the aftertaste, but the original impression is week. Not high in my book.

A well made American Porter from Arbor Brewing. Poured out to a nice dark brown color that appeared damned near black. Only small traces of foam were noted in the glass. Aromas of complex malts and grains were present, with some cocoa notes and peat hints as well. Taste was quite enjoyable; roasted malt and earth, wood notes, dry grain, a raw sugar cane character and a touch of hops blended well on the palate. Mouthfeel was fair and creamy due to the cask conditioning. Drinkability was north of average. I'd like this one again. Recommended.
