Australian hops may be a well-loved staple in craft beer now, but when we started up a small brewery in North County San Diego twenty-four years ago, they were unattainable on our side of the Pacific. These intense varieties boast a multitude of dank & tropical elements, building a flavor profile as powerful as the sound of a didgeridoo. Or a limited-press vinyl of some lesser-known doom metal. Where classic West Coast bitterness meets modern fruit-forward hoppiness, this trans-Pacific recipe featuring Galaxy, Ella and Vic Secret seeks to combine more than one genre. DidgeriDOOM… We like the sound of that.

Grabbed a can of this, a bunch of other stuff and a 6-pack of something else on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. Not too sure how often I’d seen this in stores, but I did have one with Chris a few weeks ago and gave it a 3.75, but I remember thinking that may have been a bit high. We’ll see tonight with a full review. Stone’s website called it, “Australian hops may be a well-loved staple in craft beer now, but when we started up a small brewery in North County San Diego twenty-four years ago, they were unattainable on our side of the Pacific. Poured a clear light amber color with 2-to-3 fingers of off-white frothy head. Could see a few bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled pine, caramel, orange, passion fruit, tropical fruit, candied peach, hints of fruit punch and herbal. Got a little bit of Galaxy and a little bit of Vic Secret (still new to Ella). Slightly better out of the can. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted similar to the nose. In order got pine, bitter aspirin, caramel, orange, passion fruit, candied peach, herbal and hints of tropical fruit punch. More Vic Secret than Galaxy, still new to Ella. (Taste - 3.50)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.50)
Was back and forth of a few of these categories, but this was probably very good overall. (Overall - 3.75)

You will probably want to read the bottle before uncapping, the printing is wrong side up as it features Australian hops. Very clever. Very peachy color with a lovely head. Very peachy aroma with some pine resin & various tropical fruits added. Taste is a nice amalgamation of bitter, sweet & some saltiness. Pine flavors are up front with a sweet fruity finish, a little citrus & sweet grain. Average viscosity, adequate carbonation & a small amount of alcohol flavor. Crank up the didgeridoo music & enjoy the down under.

One review to date? Just picked up a single can of 24th anniversary at Trader Joe's, it's a different world than 10 or 20 years ago. No, I don't want a Mango White Claw....
Pour into a pint glass from a 12 oz. upside down can is clear, light copper and with a hint of haze. Decent cap of foam sticks around for the party.
Nose is hopped up yet with a touch of ethanol, duh. Mango and orange hop notes, muddled fruit, blood orange. Bitterness grows on you with warming. Gets danky, swampy. Bit rich in flavor as expected given abv. Lots of residuals, touch gummy in the end. Overall a tad viscous and meandering but decent. One and done however.

Not bad but not amazing either. Typical Stone IPA.
It has a nice dark hazy orange with a strong but enjoyable aroma. Tasty hops (nothing special), the bitterness isn't overpowering so it's relatively easy to drink if you've drank Stone before.
Overall a good beer (better than average) but not one that will stick out.

A deeply brass brew, filled with a robust stream of bubbles, rising to a craggy, uneven head. Appealing, alive, and a little unusual. Looks rich and royal, if a bit off its rocker -- think Richard the III. An appealing pour that makes you want to dig in deeper.
Aroma is surprisingly muted, with notes of poached stone fruit (peaches, especially), clay, iodine, and crushed grape leaves. No fresh, raw hop profile here, nothing leaping out of the glass. A beer in wait.
Flavor is dominated by pine sap, lemongrass, and gentian. No juice, no fruit, no mercy! A little malt sweetness flickers by, only to be brushed aside by another wave of bracing, four-on-the-floor, cheek-puckering hop power and a waft of booze. I didn't know they made them like this anymore, honestly. Loses a few points for one-dimensionality, but what a dimension it is. Tastes a little bit like Rogue Old Crustacean's younger, trimmer, beach-blonde surfer cousin, if I had to make a comparison.
Mouthfeel is a little low, for what it is. But with such a clean, bitter profile, it probably couldn't have handled more carbonation. Nice hop burps rise up. Feeling the booziness a little, too as I drink more of the glass.
Overall, this is a real throwback -- the sort of beer you could find in the wilds of craft brewing right when Stone was starting out twenty-four years ago. Won't be for everyone, but worth having everyone try. I'll be socking away a six pack to see how this ages too -- I bet it's going to have some legs. Recommended.

Dang sucker pours a pretty dark orange hue like your neighbors who left their pumpkin out to rot till December. Ok...
Aroma speaks to me though. Like, the first time I heard George Harrison’s guitar gently weep. I’m into it...
When the dang thing hit my tongue, I lit up like an Angel at the top of the Christmas tree. Man, I wish that I had wings...
And when I swallowed this beverage down my gullet, it was soft and supple. Not perfection, but what is? Alright...
Overall, it’s a nice West Coast beer for the West Coast bro that is Raul.
Get it.
