On tap, Michigan Summer Beerfest 2013. Was standing around, finishing up my Monster 29 and waiting for my friends to get their Bourbon Barrel Plead the Fifth, figured I'd run up to the counter and grab a Turtle Stout - it sounded good enough. It pours black, jet black, with a deep mocha-java looking head that grows and lasts for a while.
The aroma is filled to the brim with cocoa notes, milky and sweet, with some hot caramel, and more heavy sweetness coupled with light roast. Sounds like a dream right? But there's something kind of "off" with the aroma. It's not quite refined, and rather than a harmonizing composition, it comes off as kind of a janky compilation of random shit. Not overtly bad or off-putting, but not what I was expecting, really.
Unfortunately, the flavor kind of suffers from the same disease - it's far from "bad", but it's just kind of weird and doesn't really taste as advertised. Some sweet cocoa, mild caramel, and a creamy sweetness with a roasty and ashy, charred malt note in the finish. Again, it sounds pretty good, right? Well, not really... it's just okay, and it really isn't doing much for me.
One of the big problems I have is this: there's a large cola flavor throughout that really throws things off, and, when coupled with the heavy roast in the finish, the beer exhibits a large astringency that makes the beer more of a challenge to drink that it should be. Sharp, tacky mouth feel with a thin-medium body and a little bit too much carbonation than is necessary.
Kind of a let down, especially after having two stellar beers from the Dark Horse booth previously. On paper, this beer sounds like nothing but a winner - but something gets lost between the paper and the brew kettle, and things don't jive well on the palate. Hodge podge-y and poorly put together with some astringency and off-flavors that just don't fit in. Perhaps this could be good with some refinement, but for now, it's merely okay at best.
