When cold weather hits, a stout can be a wonderful thing. Some stouts offer a great look and enticing smell but fall short by being too smooth and a little bland. This one looks great, quite dark with a tan, creamy head. The flavor pulls through by delivering a good balance on coffee & chocolate over a smooth, malty body.

This is a great stout! I love the super rich, super roasted maltiness in this beer with a traditional ale carbonation. Fun, rich, bold, not over powering. I have one of these everytime I visit the wonderful brewery!

Had on tap at Melt here is GSO today.Came in a standard pint a deep dark chocolate color with a creamy-like deep beige head atop.Dark roast and bitter chocolate in the nose, not much sweetness detected.Flavors of mocha coffee with a touch of molasses/brown sugar giving some sweetness in the finish.Just a well made solid stout, not overly roasted but great roast flavor with just a hint of sweetness.

Black bear stout on tap at Brewgrass 2013.
Rich dark malt flavor with a noticeable but subtle hop component.
Light carbonation. very smooth. Near full body.
Lasting, dark malt flavor has a light smoked peat component too. Good sweet/bitter balance.

Out of all the beers available at Southern Appalachian, this is my favorite.
The aroma is a blend of chocolate and coffee that envelopes the senses. The taste is a great mix of dark coffee, chocolate and roasted malts that make this stout a delight to drink again and again.
It's very easy to drink and great during the cooler months of the year.

Another beer that I never would have had the chance to try if not for the Brewgrass festival this weekend. Served on tap and consumed on 09/20/2008..
This one poured out a deep dark black, no light shining through this one at all! Rich tan colored head was then carrying on over the top. Slight fade, but still some good retention left behind a solid looking beer for sure.
Rich smoked malts are all over the aroma. Hints of chocolate, some light molasses and a touch of vanilla maybe? Defintly intresting. The flavor was a little light, and to be honest, a little heay on the smoke, especially in the finish. There was a decent touch of chocolate sprinked in throughout, but the overall dry, chocolate stout like flavor prevailed. Smooth feel, lots of creamy carbonation left it coating the tongue and mouth. Easily a session stout as the ABV was hardly noticed throughout the session.
Overall not bad. Better then average, but still needs a little work. I would not turn it down at all.
