Another review from March Madness 2017. Didn't even know this was a barleywine until I read so.

Pours a very dark brown to black so much so that you could mistake this for a stout. 1/3" brown head, average retention. Aroma of bourbon, maris otter, hops, bitterness, booziness.

Taste reveals more roasted malt, plenty of hop bitterness firmly entrenching this as an American barleywine. Its definitely intense as there is a strong combination of bitterness and alcohol heat throughout the entire pour. LIght amounts of caramel. Stronger on the toffee. Little grapefruit rind notes. And yet it also has a light dark fruit pinch. Tastes like a blend of different beers/styles at times. The bourbon character is mild enough that I could imagine this being either only partially aged or if 100% aged, it wasn't for all that long.

It does have kind of that kitchen sink approach to a barrel aged barleywine. Not bad, just not competing with the greats by any means.

A great Barley style in a bottle. Bourbon Barrel aging for 6 months makes this a very flavorful brew. Intensity in the perfect word to describe how it goes down. Actually the Bourbon taste is one of the strongest that I can remember. At 12% ABV and 70 IBU, what do you expect. Seems like it is retired from what I was reading. Hope I can find it again.

Pours into an imperial nonic a rich amber with a sticky half finger light tan colored head atop,rich clarity and color to the body.Mild whiskey with more assertive caramel,brown sugar,and piney hops in the nose,a great mix.Plum and caramel flavors upfront on the palate over top of the whiskey barrel,I really like the resin and earth hop flavors that really show thru in the finish.It's an American style barleywine type that I haven't had in a while and I miss,it's got a big assertive hop profile,a great beer.

10 Year Anniversary Ale
Aged for 6 month on bourbon barrels then dry hopped afterwards

APPEARANCE: Pours a three finger, medium looking, slightly foamy off-white head with good retention. Clear burnt umber in color with decent carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full cap and leaves lots of lacing on the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving some nice lacing down the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Caramel, toffee, lots of red fruits and melon on the nose. Some slight oak aromas and some alcohol as well. Notes of vanilla and butterscotch under the hoppy, melon overtones. Nice stuff.

TASTE: Caramel, toffee, red fruits and melony sweetness up front, then some oak, vanilla and butterscotch with some alcohol at the swallow. Bold and lingering finish is laced with sweet malt flavor, toffee and butterscotch, bourbon, oak, vanilla notes and melon and citrus bitterness as well. The barrel aging is milder and the hop presence forthcoming enough.

PALATE: Medium body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down silky with a bit of a burn and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. A bit of heat lingers.

OVERALL: Fun stuff. This one is a little more hop forward that bourbon barrel forward, so don’t expect a bourbon bomb of a barley wine here. The barrel aging is definitely there, though it takes a more of a supporting role. The look and feel are well put together and the flavor profile is certainly worth checking out if you like the style. I’m glad I picked one up and would do so again if given the chance. Try it out if you can still find it. Cheers!

22 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Had 3/11/17.

Pours a darker ruby, semi opaque, with a one inch foamy, quickly dissipating, head and some foamy lacing. Active carbonation. Aromas of malt, yeast, figs, plums, dates, raisins, brown sugar, light cherries, light bourbon, a hint of licorice. Some floral hops. The taste brings malt, strong dates, bourbon, figs, plums, oak, light vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, some hop bitterness throughout. Smooth, creamy, a solid body, well carbonated.

Really good flavor and aroma, well balanced between malt, hops and barrels. Quite definitely worth a purchase.

Look: It pours amber with a rue head. It has a brown head with the head retention being low.

Smell: It has a strong malty rich aroma to start. There are some citrus aromas with floral elements and a spice. There are also aromas of dark fruits resembling plums and raisins. The malt aromas have caramel, molasses, and a bit of chocolate.

Taste: The flavors are highlighted by caramel, a bit of chocolate, and molasses. There are citrus notes including orange. There are other flavors including plums and raisins and a bit of roast, spice, and a bit of sherry. The bourbon flavors are blended in well with the other flavors.

Feel: It has a full body that is slightly syrupy. There is a good balance between malts and hops with the bourbon flavors enhancing the combination.

Overall, an excellent barleywine that has good balance and features bourbon flavors without them being overbearing.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep brassy gold topped by a finger of light tan head that fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of caramel and toffee with some faded hop bitterness along with a little oak and vanilla
T: Taste is toasted malts with notes of caramel, oak, and vanilla along with some faded oily hops. Slightly spicy alcohol at times too. Swallow is oily hops followed by more caramel, oak and vanilla from the barrel aging with some toffee notes toward the back
M: This beer is big and a little sticky on the palate with soft carbonation that is adequate for the style and just under prickly. The beer has an oily hop finish along with some drying effects from the ABV.
O: Overall this one is interesting. The barrel aging isn't as loud as I would like it to be. The base beer is solid but this one either should have been released on its own or redone as an English barleywine to allow the malts to meld better with the bourbon barrel. Overall not bad at all but there are better representatives of the style.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in 8/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red/light copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, orange, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, apricot, citrus peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, bourbon, toasted oak, light nuttiness/vanilla, floral, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/pine hops, fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and moderate bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, orange, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, raisin, plum, fig, cherry, apricot, citrus peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, bourbon, toasted oak, light nuttiness/vanilla, floral, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate pine/herbal/citrus peel bitterness and slight bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, stone fruit, citrus peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, bourbon, toasted oak, floral, grass, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Slight dryness from lingering bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy, fairly sticky, and slightly slick/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a small pleasant warmth lingering after the finish, with no barrel booziness. Overall this is an outstanding barrel aged American barelywine! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and moderate bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. The aromas definitely shined the most from the dry hopping, very juicy feeling on hop and fruity yeast notes. The barrel presence isn’t that big, but you still get a some nice barrel character; which is fine, because it isn’t boozy for being this young as a result. A highly enjoyable offering.

5oz pour at Hopping Frog for the bargain price of $6.49+.

Dark red. Smells like sickly sweet caramel. Sweet and very bitter. Little to no barrel, which would round out the sweetness. Totally gross once it warmed up. Avoid.

I'll start of by saying i'm not the biggest fan of barleywines (barrel aged or otherwise). This beer however didn't quite act like a barleywine.
L: It looks like a typical barlywine with the brownish-red color to it. not much to say there.

S: The smell was somewhat off putting at the start but mellowed to a nicer fruit and caramel.

T: The flavor is where this beer really shines. it starts of with a great sort of fruit taste to it. then settles to a sort of spicy taste with more of what you would expect from a barleywine (the part i was least excited about). The finish is spectacular with a warming sensation and incredible flavor you can feel in your moth and all down your throat.

F: While you can definitely tell this is a barleywine it doesn't always feel like one.

I'd definitely recommend this beer even if you are not a big barleywine fan.

Starting off visually, the name is already a perfect fit. Body is an intense copper-red with a faint khaki ring.

Fig Newton explodes on the nose, with pear, smooth luscious caramel, walnut, and a bit of a shock to the senses with a touch of pine and mint. This is one of the best smelling barleywines I've ever enjoyed.

Taste is really complex as well, with prune, spicy heat, and fruitcake, among other things. You can definitely sense some hops bouncing around in abundance, although exactly what they contribute I can't put my finger on.

The smooth, moderately heavy body gets really frothy when swirled around.

This is an all around enjoyable barleywine, even during Summer, which I rarely say.


Finally having an aged version of this on 1/13/18, I am happy to report this has gotten even better and more complex with time. Becoming more woody and a little hotter than I remember, this has developed more brandy and caramel, with less dark fruit. It has a more mature spirit character than Naked Evil, with a peppery taste. It also actually gets better and more nuanced with food, and maintains a strong fiery pine resin hop presence.
