The seventh release in their Tadpole Series--a very small batch brewed in collaboration with one of their bartenders. Cory's Breakfast Stout is an oatmeal stout with cinnamon, maple syrup and vanilla inspired by a certain brew from the Tar Heel state.

Appearance is dark cola brown with burnt red edges and a fizzy tan head that quickly dies to bubbly ring.

I'm smelling a hint of roasted coffee malt, while the vanilla and syrup seem to be lending a banana peel sweetness. Cinnamon and smoke are far in the background, but there is not enough maple or cinnamon to really bring you into French Toast land.

Taste is pretty sweet, with that fresh banana coming back again (not like a Belgian, there is no yeast spice). Maple and cinnamon are almost totally absent in taste, but that classic BORIS chocolate flavor creeps in. It really needs to warm for the French Toast element to be more prominent, but it's still more faint than I'd like.

It's a bit tangy, and a little thinned out from the base beer, but still frothy.

The tasting room staff also put this in a tower with a shit ton of dark coffee beans, which was darker black with no head. It had a strong coffee and roasted malt aroma and taste, with some teasing butter and cinnamon also on the nose. A little more bitterness from the coffee reduced the cloying sweetness and made it the better of the two.

I think the syrup played tricks on the usual process here. It has become clear to me what a challenge it is working with maple and cinnamon, as I've had a number of beers from well renowned breweries trying to put their spin on this thing, many in bottled releases, which have come out even less pronounced, but in a similar vein. This is pretty good, but some more work needs to be done to bring it closer to something like Morning Delight meets Sunday Brunch. I hope Hoppin Frog keeps trying to work with maple and cinnamon because I think their stellar execution of the RIS would totally kill with a well done treatment like this.
