Body displays like a fallen maple leaf, clear reddish-copper with a minimal tan blanket leaving a persistent ring.
Smell is banana candy, zucchini bread, caramel apple and brown sugar.
Taste is very much reminiscent of bananas fosters, bringing brandy, brown sugar, caramel, and banana elements all at once. This then somehow transforms to smoothing banana bread with a slick round feel, a moderate fizz and surprisingly no heat. Okay, there it is, some heat in the swallow, with a semi-dry and sticky finish, warming the belly as well. As the barleywine warms, candy apple, graham, glazy toffee and sugared nuts develop.
This is a really unique beer--I've never had anything like it, and as such don’t know what to think of it. I definitely get the sense that it's a bit green, and will highly likely benefit greatly from time in the cellar. Not to mention, the belly-warming nature of this beer will prove as a much more fitting beer to open in the wintertime.
Having this two and a half years later, it's remarkably similar to my original experience, but I found myself coming away with the new view that this was kind of like a dubbel, but extra strong, yet not a quad. Definitely a unique beer.
Even further down the line, in the fall of 2021, the maple seems to have amplified after all this time--a development I'd have never expected. It's actually quite delectable, but I couldn't imagine increasing the score at this point.
