Can: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate notes with some woody notes with some bourbon and light vanilla notes also perceptible. Taste is also a mix of black chocolate notes with some woody notes, bourbon and vanilla with a dry finish. Body is full with a nice oily-like texture with good carbonation and light warning alcohol notes. Solid BA stout with great barrel notes.

16oz can from Tavour. Dark black pour, creamy beige head. Dark roasty aroma, woody, boozy. Drank this side by side with regular DORIS, and you get pick up the extra barrel notes from the extended aging . Very rich and strong.

D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer Extended Barrel-Aged from Hoppin’ Frog Brewing. Picked up at the brewery, Akron, OH, 08/04/22. $ 12.83(Including tax)/16 oz can ($ 0.802/oz). In reefer at brewery, stored at 37 degrees at home. Reviewed 14/06/22. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on bottom of can “BEST BY MAY 19 2024”. Served at 55.2 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King Snifter. Final temperature 63.5 degrees.
Appearance – 3.25
First pour – Black (SRM 40), opaque. Looks like old crankcase oil.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Average (Maximum one cm, aggressive center pour), russet, high density, short retention, diminishing to a 0.1 cm to 0.2 cm high density crown fed by slow effervescence producing no cap.
Lacing – Problematic at 10.5 ABV.
Aroma – 3.25 – Roasted chocolate malt and some weak dark fruit. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.25 – Weak roasted malt but no yeast and no hops. Seems extraordinarily rich. Slightly bitter. No ethanol (10.5 % ABV as marked on label) aroma or taste. Gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Full, creamy, soft carbonation. Very silky feel.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Weak, weak, weak! Perhaps a little blacker than the average RIS with a richer brown coloration in the short-lived head but otherwise an unremarkable appearance. Aroma is weak and not particularly stimulating. I assume oak barrels were used but I can neither taste nor smell them – no vanillin or tannins. And if the assumed oak barrels were previously used for some type of whiskey, I can’t detect any remnants of that either. Sorry Hoppin’ Frog, to my plebian tastes, this seems totally detached from the stream of excellent stouts you have produced.

Beautiful, thick'n chewy appearance, jet black, short lived brown head that fades away, no lacing, but it does leave a nice slimy film on the glass. Snot machine is overwhelmed by the aromas, chocolate, coffee, molasses, ash, dark fruit, some booze. Taste buds get all that too. Smooth creamy texture, probably due to the oatmeal. This is one terrific beer!

Pours a very deep brown / black with a good amount of dense, mocha colored head that receded to a thin, persistent cap and ring. Good looking beer. Aroma is rich and boozy. Vanilla, raisin, light roasted malts, oak, fig and maybe some chocolate all combine well.

Unlike the nose, which lead with vanilla for me, the taste leads with the barrel notes. It's an interesting journey, as I get barrel up front, then more charred barrel, then some clear chocolate notes, with some pleasant light heat from the alcohol on the tail end. I'm not doing it justice, but there's a really nice complexity to the beer. Every sip seems a little different than the last, and as with the nose, the various flavors work well together. Full bodied and smooth going down.

Overall, this is an enjoyable Saturday morning sipper as I watch Arsenal (hopefully) beat Man United.

From the 16 oz can in a snifter with a big thanks to Bluejacket74! Cheers Brother!
This solid brew pours a dark coal black with dark brown highlights and a modest
head of light brown foam that sizzles to a thin ring. Nose of dark cocoa, tobacco,
bourbon, vanilla, char, and dark coffee with dark raisin notes. Flavors hit the perfect
mark of what to seek in an imperial----dark cocoa, bourbon, raisin, fig, brandy notes,
light oak, dark coffee, mellow vanilla, earthy malts, and rich char notes throughout.
Warmth gives rise to other dark fruit notes as well as creamy fudge and light bittering
hop notes. Excellent mouth feel; full slick body, smooth, rich, coating, low carbonation,
warming, and finishing with a bitter malt note.

Overall----excellence from the good Frog folk!

Cheers and MANY thanks to Bluejacket74 for this one!

This was such a wonderful surprise in flavor. I expected a great oatmeal double stout no doubt, but what I got was that and more. There are big tobacco notes on this one along with charred barrel that obviously held some sort of whiskey in it. I miss this style and I miss these flavors; it's been a while.

Black body; light brown head, initially thick and foamy then soon diminishes to a thin, creamy head. Excellent aroma; boozy chocolate, raisin, and tobacco; plum; oak. Dark, rich taste; boozy cocoa; figs and raisin; well-rounded bitterness peeking through the heavy sweetness. Heavy body; sludgy and velvety; bold alcohol warmth cuts through the residual sugar sweetness.

Based on my memory of other D.O.R.I.S. iterations, this one certainly has a smooth aged factor going for it. There is a rustic, earthy quality to this powerhouse. The aging delivers a fine, smooth and chewy Russian imperial stout.

Served at 63° F; unreadable canning date on the bottom of the can other than 2021.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high mocha covered head that died down, leaving a narrow collar of tan bubbles around the edge and wisps of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of dark malts and tobacco are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has additional flavors of dark chocolate with notes of bourbon from the barrel aging. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I thought that this beer drinks rather well considering its strength.

16 ounce can, best by May 19 2024 stamped on the bottom of the can. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch brown head that stuck around a while. Decent amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like burnt/charred malt, tobacco, dark fruit, dark chocolate, pine and vanilla. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some licorice, bourbon and dark bready flavors. I know this was extended barrel aged but the bourbon character doesn't stand out here but maybe that was the intent for this brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and a bit creamy with a low/moderate amount of carbonation. Easy enough to drink, too. I thought this was a pretty good imperial stout, definitely worth picking up if you're into RIS's or any of Hoppin' Frog's other stouts.
