Barrel Aged Corner Slice from Hoppin Frog. 16 fl oz can, Rare Beer Club selection. Picked up at the brewery, Akron, OH, 30/01/25. Reviewed 02/02/25 (Review 3450). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “BEST BY DEC 17, 2034.” Stored in reefer at the distributor, at 39 degrees F at home. Served at 48.7 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 55.5 degrees F.
Appearance – 3. Just plain ugly and unappetizing.
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), murky.
Body – Deep Amber (SRM 15), opaque. Under direct light, pumpkin orange in color and a slight precipitate is visible. When rear-lite, it disperses light into a cinnamon glow.
Head: Small (Maximum 0.5 cm, aggressive center pour), amber, medium density, fizzy. Gone almost instantly, leaving a modest roiling effervescence.
Lacing – None
Aroma – 4.25 – Weak carrots and raisins. No hops, no yeast, no ethanol (16.5 % ABV, as marked on label). No disulfide or diacetyl. No barrels.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins sweet with distinct carrot cake flavors. No yeast, no hops, no ethanol. No disulfides, no diacetyl. Mild gastric warming. A bit of barrel on the aftertaste.
Palate – 4.25 – Full; creamy; soft carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Although the barrel-aging is not obvious until the end, it definitely differentiates the BA version from the non-BA. The BA version is so much smoother and in general tastier.

Turbid brown with a tinge of dark orange, it's like a glass full of beef broth with an instantaneously dying head.
I don't know how barrel aging would bring this several steps closer to actually emulating the inspiration than last year's base, but it smells exactly like carrot cake and cream cheese frosting. Coming closer, cinnamon gets bigger and spicier, as does vanilla dosed cream cheese.
Taste is more caramel, verging into butterscotch, then carrot, with the cakey quality coming out after the swallow.
Barreling maybe adds a little prickliness, but overall the beer doesn't taste nearly as fiery as the 16.5% would indicate.
