to me, this is way more of a german porter than it is a traditional schwarzbier, i mean, its thick and dense and almost syrupy, nothing like the brightly carbonated lighter bodied beer its trying to be, but if i put those things aside and just drink the beer, its very good. i like its richness, a milky chocolate character to the dark grain, and a real earthy espresso flavor as well. its got a ton of roast and a thicker texture, much more like a porter or even a stout. i do get some of the german malt character in the flavor though, so i think they are off to a rather authentic start, but im also not sure its lagered with its sweet and long finish. its a great winter beer though, more body helps it be satisfying in cold weather, but the low abv keeps me drinking it all day. fireside stuff right here. three barrel has gotten a little better i think with its recent round of beers, that or i am just now tasting some of their better ones and had the less impressive ones all first. if you come into this one expecting a classic example of the style, you wont be happy, but if you come in with an open mind, its a lovely glass of beer.
