Unlabeled bottle shared by Grant - thanks! I think we determined the bottle was from 2007 so it's a fair guess that the beer is that old as well.
Pours a slightly hazy light amber color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.
Smells of medium malts accompanied by large amounts of tannins and smaller amounts of mildly tart cherry aromas. Also present are hints of dark vinegar.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Smooth medium malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by lightly tart cherry and berry flavors. Tannins thin things out a bit midway through the sip along with very light hints of funk. The funk fades out quickly, allowing the tannins and tart fruit flavors to carry through to a crisp ending.
Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.
Drinkability is also good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.
Overall this beer didn't blow me away but it was a surprisingly solid offering of a style that's not the easiest to nail down from a brewery I'd never heard of. Worth a shot if by some miracle you see it around.
