this was one of the best beers at the brewery, which is a really cool old historic building right in downtown billings, worth visiting for sure. not sure i would quite call this one a stout, as its pretty thin in body, mildly transparent in color, and not exhibiting quite the roasted depth of a stout on the grain side, but its a really clever little black ale, with a nice head on it and a pungent aroma of fresh coffee grounds and chocolate malt. there isnt actually any coffee in this, i asked the brewer, but you would almost swear this is in the taste. the malt gives it such a distinct coffee character, its really uncanny. i like and appreciate the lack of body in this, it keeps it really drinkable for me, yet satisfying in chilly winter weather, especially at this abv, so low. not overly complex, but it doesnt have to be, its unique enough in its coffee complexion and sessionable mouthfeel that i wouldnt change it much. well done on this one.
