Quite striking for it's unusual flavor. Very herbal, moderately sweet. Interesting, well off the beaten track, but not to my taste.

600 mL bottle included in the Best of Beau's 2014 mix pack; the last of four. Bottled Oct 27 2014 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a bright, effervescent orange-amber hue, generating one finger of loose, fizzly white head that recedes quite quickly. After only a couple of minutes, the solitary remnants are a wispy film on the surface and a narrow, foamy collar. Extremely aromatic on the nose; almost pungent - lavender leaps right out at you, and the rosemary is quite noticeable as well. Quite herbal and flowery, with suggestions of lemon, fresh mint, thyme, grainy malt and caramelized sugar. Kind of reminds me of the last time I was unwillingly dragged into Bath & Body Works.

Very unusual flavour profile. It begins sweet - almost sugary, in fact, with caramel and honey immediately coming to mind. Floral lavender is every bit as dominant as it was on the nose, with candied orange and lemon zest playing as a foil to the intense herbal flavours of rosemary and thyme. Finishes with a peppery, somewhat ginger-like kick, with a mild floral, herbal bitterness closing things out. Lavender and rosemary herb flavour remain present on the palate well after each sip; I could see this turning some people off, but I don't mind. Medium in body, with sturdy carbonation levels that provide a delicate, prickly crispness on the tongue. Not particularly sessionable; the herbs give this one a bit of a potpourri vibe that tires the palate out fairly quickly.

Final Grade: 3.91, a B+. When you've reviewed hundreds of different beers, it's increasingly rare for something to really raise an eyebrow... but this beer definitely managed to pique my curiosity. St. Luke's Verse is a refreshing, neat little herbed ale with a set of very unique flavours - many of which I have never seen used in any beer, ever. While the unusual ingredients will certainly limit this one's range of appeal, BAs with any interest in this style should consider this a worthwhile pick-up, if only for interest's sake. Like Beau's' other gruit-style beers, this is a solid niche offering that I MIGHT see myself purchasing again... maybe.

On tap at The Only, part of Beau's FeBREWary gruit series, a lavender gruit.

Close your eyes, take a sip… and you'd swear you're drinking lavender ginger ale. The nose reveals the stronger lavender notes and between the sweetness, a hint of ginger, and the spritzy carbonation - you have lavender ginger ale. No head but ample spritzy carb, sweet in a 'tripping the light fantastic' sort of way, light herbal notes that almost border on peppery, simple but refreshing.

While it barely tastes like 'beer' and is perhaps a little too simple and light for the 'seasoned' beer drinkers of this site… it's a refreshing, delightful ale. A nice twist.

look: 3.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.75

Appearance: A clear golden body that shows ample carbonation, poured with a single finger of head that did not lace but retained exceptionally well.

Smell: An abundant herbal mix as lemongrass, pepper, lavender with touches of rosemary, cane sugar. Warming helps the beer come out more which really addresses it's only weakness, in that it could use a bit more potency. Still a very minor complaint.

Taste: Starts with a herbal lemon and pepper note before a brief mild malt note makes an appearance with a mixed rosemary and oregano touch as then some floral and earth notes which I assume is lavender and earthy hops round out the beer in a mild fashion.

Mouthfell: The carbonation helps out the entire beer, but it is a bit thin. The aftertaste is a mixed herbal note that lasts forever but doesn't cling excessively, although has a slight dry note. Transitioning is also quite solid, especially given then range.

Drinkability: Light bodied and full of flavour, a rare and great combination. Easy to drink and easy on the system, but the dry note stops it just short of refreshing which is really the only weakness.

Final Thoughts: Another excellent offering from Beau's which further cements my love of Gruit. This one is a herbal explosion and quite frankly I sincerely hope this one comes around again as I thoroughly enjoyed it. Two thumbs up.

Had this on tap at The Corner in the Glebe. Apparently it was International Gruit Day. From notes.

A - Hazy orange pour with two fingers of white head on top. Very mild carbonation. No lace, no retention.

S - All sorts of interesting herbal spices. Sage? Not sure how to describe it aside from that. Floral. Pretty interesting.

T - Honey, sweet malt, lot's of herbs and spices. Floral, sweet spice. Pleasant stuff.

M - Mild carbonation, medium body, sweet spice in the finish.

O/D - This really surprised me. My expectations for Beau's have dropped significantly in the last little while, but this was the best I've had from them in a long time. Lot's of floral and spicey stuff going on without being too aggressive. I liked it.

600ml bottle poured into a pint glass. ABV 5.7%.

L - Poured a slightly hazy deep gold with a slim head that quickly vanished. Visible carbonation. Not much lacing.

S - Lavender, herbs, grains in the background. Can't detect any hops whatsoever. It smells great. (Admittedly I'm having a bit if hard time getting over the fact it smells like my kids' bubble-bath.)

T - Sweet malts, lavender, herbs. There was a a harsh note in the finish at first but it went away as the beer warmed up. Mild lavender aftertaste.

F - Medium carbonation. Medium body. Clean finish.

O - After the first sip I though this might be a drain pour but as it warmed up I found it more palatable.

This fruit over flows with floral lavender and rosemary flavors, but without any bitterness to stand on, comes off like a slightly malty watered down potpourri soda. Remarkable how odd and undigestible beer can taste without hops.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden/orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down moderately fast and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of lavender, ginger and some pepper. Very floral/herbal.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some lavender, ginger, herbal notes (slightly grassy), light pepper and some floral notes.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

Way too much lavender. It's more pleasant on the nose than in the mouth where it dominates poorly.

Pour from the bottle was an inconspicuous clear golden colour with some nice white head that doesn't stick around for too long.

S - powerful notes of lavender, reminds me of the disney scratch and sniff books of my childhood, floral and lemony, pepper, some rosemary potentially but this is quite an intense and astringent lavender spice to it. Also quite candied.

T - has more balance and nuance, oranges, upfront lavender notes, wildflower honey, peppery notes again with a bit of candied orange peel. Pale bready malt.Candied lavender notes, a bit of a sickly sweetness balanced by the herbalness and slightly oily lavender and rosemary notes.

M - moderate body becoming quite light on the finish with a light carbonation. Quite light with some stickiness to it though.

While some of the fundamentals here are in place, the beer never really works as a whole. The lavender really dominates this at most points and where it does it carries a sickly candy sweetness that takes awhile to balance out. Where some of the citrus and earthy spice notes were allowed to emerge it become quite nice actually, especially as thyme came up. Not one of Beau's best ales, Bogwater was a far better gruit in my opinion.
